Default 2008 College World Series: "A beautiful thing!"

Cinderella goes to the (base) ball:
Quote:
June 26, 2008
...Fresno State (47-31) won its first baseball championship, despite having to play its last 22 games on the road. The Bulldogs became the first Western Athletic Conference team to win the title..."You have to tip your hat to Fresno," said Georgia coach David Perno. "They're true champions. They did it the hard way. Five wins in five days, and they won the games that mattered."...

The College World Series would be nearly perfect if they'd just get rid of the aluminum bats and the DH (1973 was a sad year for the game). Then it would be close to pure baseball.

Pretty sure I watch more college baseball games that MLB. More sports, less baloney.

Although I was pulling for Georgia, congrats to Fresno State for an amazing offensive performance.

Which parts of the World, meaning Planet Earth, take part in this competition, apart from colleges in the USA?

Compare soccer: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Cup
Compare golf: Canada, now World Cup series - it grew up!
Compare athletics - now continental rather than national teams, ditto!
Compare shooting (pistol, rifle, trap, 'skeet'(?)), horse riding (not racing), judo, any sport you mention, even in tiddlywinks World contests have taken place that included teams from Portugal, Ecuador, Brazil and Argentina as well as the UK and the USA.

"World" - a word with a special meaning, that isn't exclusively "USA"!

Does this have to be brought up every single year? Baseball has over 100 years of history in this country. It's been called the World Series for over 100 years. The college world series is viewed as an amateur extension of the professional game so it uses some of the same traditions, including calling it's championship series the "World Series".

It's just tradition. Let it go. Besides, the Toronto Blue Jays won in 1992 and 1993.

There also exists a baseball "World Cup" that is an international competition if it makes you any happier. Cuba almost always wins (25 out of 36 events).

There is also the Carribean Baseball World Series involving only teams from Carribean nations.

Congratulations to Fresno State. Once Rice and LSU and Stanford were eliminated, they were my team. Theirs was a fantastic accomplishment. (Does anyone else think college baseball coaches are mulling the possible positive aspects of detaching ligaments... on purpose?)

And, congratulations to Georgia as well. I'll repeat a Darrell Royal quote uttered in a similar situation. "There are a lot more people looking up at you than down on you." In fact, I just named three who would change places with Georgia in a heart beat.

How many non-U.S. colleges field a baseball team?

According to Wiki it is mostly played in the Americas and eastern Asia.
