Default It's Only the end of the World AGAIN!!! (Woo Woo Alert)

A thread on a forum I post on has been talking about the end of the world in 2012 and has some video clips posted on it. (I have not had the time to view them)

I did try searching on 2012 here to point my fellow TiBBers to sanity, but got an overload of other threads here.

Anyone care to go over to that thread, register and rebut or reassure? Some of them over there are sceptical, but there are few there who are science literate.

Apparently there is an end of the world website here

If the world ends in 2012 it will only because of a delayed destruction from 2000 or 1999 or 1989 or the year 1000 or one of them other world endings anyway.

You could try pointing out that, even if the various predictions are accurate as to timing (& interestingly there are a number of them) AFAIK the only one that predicts the end of the World is the biblical one. The others all talk about the end of an Age or Sun.

We have seen a number of 'End of Ages' as time goes by; around the time of Christ we went from Pisces to Ares.

That way you aren't simply contradicting them but you are alleviating the doom being foretold.

I seem to remember a certain religious group, which due to forum rules must be unnamed predicting the end of the world in 1918, 1921 1975 etc.

I assumed this 2012 thing was due to one of those asteroids that was going to come pretty close, or some ancient calendar doing a date roll over.

So you started another one.

No significant asteroid approaches are expected in 2012.

Some ancient calendar is rolling over: Mayan.

Near the uneventful end of 2012, the doomsayers will shift their predictions of cataclysm to some other date or dates. Same as it ever was.

There are enough mentions of 2012 now in this topic, to attract people searching for information about 2012. To aid them, here's my collection of some of what's been previously discussed about 2012 here in BAUT Forum, and news from related sites:

Wow! They have video from 2012! That's very cool. Can I borrow the time machine when they are done with it?

I'm... amazed... at the link. Makes me want to get in a bunker. For different reasons.

But the other link did offer a five-year personal planner to use up to 2012. What's the last page? Don't forget to die, 10AM?

Smile Funny enough

that this post would be here! I knew it would! I heard all the hooplah about the planetary alignments, the mayan calendar and such. But heres a new one...or maybe an old one that you fine people can tell me. I also heard that the solar flares will be at its worst for the year 2012 and that could be one reason we would have "end of days" so to speak. Is there any truth to that? I also heard that there is some kind of "meeting of the great minds" with scientist from around the world to discuss this possiblity of how to handle these flares and what kind of impact they will have. As I heard they will be the worst we've ever seen. Thanks!!

Short answer - no.

Slightly longer answer - This webpage from NOAA has tons of information about Solar Cycle 24, which just started.
Quote:
June 27, 2008 During the annual Space Weather Workshop held in Boulder, CO in May, 2008, the Solar Cycle 24 Prediction Panel released an update to the prediction for the next solar cycle. In short, the update is that the panel has not yet made any changes to the prediction issued in April, 2007. The panel expects solar minimum to occur in March, 2008. The panel expects the solar cycle to reach a peak sunspot number of 140 in October, 2011 or a peak of 90 in August, 2012.
If you look through the stuff you will see the panel has not reached a consensus yet (the models are still works in progress), but they don't predict anything much different than the last cycle.

The Earth has been going through this for billions of years, and there is absolutely nothing to think that anything much different will happen in the next 4 years (or the next 4000).

See this is why I come here!! To get some facts or at least get pointed in some good directions. I dont want to be a WooWoo but the media sure doesnt help! I really hate it when the media and news papers put out such bad information to scare the masses. I need to back off tv again! LOL I heard about this book Apocalypse 2012 and read a few blurps here and there. I have to say it makes you go hhhmm if you have no real science background or knowledge. Then on some webpages I saw stuff on the mayan calendars and then you see the same crap on Good Morning America!

So, is this the last time you take some simple media accounts without a grain, or a ton, of salt? You're going to employ your critical thinking skills next time? You won't get fooled again?

Cool.

June 27, 2008 ... The panel expects solar minimum to occur in March, 2008.

A safe prediction.

... In short, the update is that the panel has not yet made any changes to the prediction issued in April, 2007. ...

The update is there is no update?

Here's a question. I was hearing about 2012 before 2000 hit. Lots of people thought the world was going to end in 2000.

I haven't heard anything about past 2012. Are there any current predictions about the world ending after 2012, or will we start hearing about those in the next couple of years?

Well, there is the date when all the Unix based date systems flip out (the Unix version of Y2K), can't remember when that is.

What I live for is for you to do what 01101001 asked. You joined four years ago. If you haven't picked up on critical thinking yet, then you really need to. You won't always be able to run back to BAUT.

Smile 2012 = change

2012, like people here say, and what I think, is not about the ending of the planet but a change.

This change could be too subtle for people to see, but very important to the sky watching Mayan people. I will defer to others, as I don't know much about the stars. The Mayan people were sophisticated and there is much we still don't understand about them. From what I understand, when there was a change of this type in the past; according to the Mayans, it was weather related.

There have been many changes in the past, overlooked by our current fast paced lifestyles. The climate is in the midst of change, dramatically enough for great tits to change their nesting habits in Britain. They are nesting two weeks earlier than they did in the past, that is the length of a bird's infancy.

I personally don't think that global warming is man made. Admittedly the Human race is not blameless. I think that climate change has more to do with space weather than anything going on Earthside. There are no SUV's on Mars. The vehicles crawling around Mars are solar. It's warming up though.

Yeah and the Mayans saw and predicted all this?

Great way to cover your tracks by saying the change is too subtle to see and that the current conditions are related.

Sheesh...

As is any other date.

Except for the one where the planet actually ends.

Or not, because then anyone who cites the original title (like me) looks like a doofus because the title has been since altered. (Not that it matters if I look like a doofus, but it could happen to other nondoofuses, too.)

The Mayan people were sophisticated and there is much we still don't understand about them. From what I understand, when there was a change of this type in the past; according to the Mayans, it was weather related.
The Mayans were very advanced for their time, at least as far as such things as their calander and their skills in naked-eye astronomy.

But I have seen no credible evidence that the Mayans of 500 years ago thought anything was going to particularly happen in 2012, other than their calendar was going to turn over. I have never seen any hint about anything with weather or climate.

There is a huge amount of evidence for climate change and a huge amount of evidence that such change is solely or largely caused by humans. If have evidence otherwise, I suggest you discuss in one of the several Global Warming threads in General Science.

You know, it just occured to me that such an event would be a Very Big Deal to the Mayans.

When our year ends, someone designs and prints a bunch of new calendars. Heck, lots of someones do. It's no Big Deal for us... 12 months on shiny paper stock.

But, have you seen the Mayan calendar? I mean, it's several tons of intricately carved stone. If you make a mistake halfway through, you don't just reset the press, you have to start over. Hours and hours of hard work, gone. Plus, you have to make another blank. And what if the king wants two? Or two hundred? This is a Major Undertaking!

Very Big Deal, indeed, and certainly worth a little angst. For a Mayan calendar maker, it could represent the end of the world.

(Woo Woo Alert)
Saying "woo woo alert" is a lot like saying "good morning": it happens every day and deals with many individuals.

Btw, I just checked my pocket calender and it ends ***THIS YEAR***.

I'm wouldn't say I'm sophisticated, but there are many things people still don't understand about me, so I guess my pocket calender must say something about the future, or about the lack of the same.

Just imagine, I'll be able to go really overboard on New Year's Eve without having to worry about any consequences.

Maybe.

Or do I have to worry about changes too subtle for me to see?

That's what all the human sacrifice was about - punishing printers who made typos.
