That is sad news.

He will be remembered around here, and his posts will live on... for a while...

Words fail me. He was thoughtful, intelligent and witty. I learned a lot from his posts. I'll miss him.

I am really saddened by this news.
I was thinking about his absence from the board as I wandered about the woods today.

He shared this with us about a year ago:

It was taken in 1979, with his son.

He had some beautiful photos from where he had been.
Here are a couple more for you to see.

This is awful news, made no less worse by its suddenness. It's always hard to lose a member of the family, and for better or worse we're a community here. We're less now for the loss of Mak, but better for having had him here while we did.

I am shocked and saddened to hear this. I have very fond memories of his support when I was about to give up during several debunkings. His wit and puns, along with his general posts will be missed by me.

Paul said recently in an email to me:

Quote:
Sorry to hear that. Remember you've got a friend in Mississippi, who will in the near future be rejoining civilization in the northeast US (or Colorado).

Getting that way, but way up north in New York is getting more and more attractive. But the thing about New Hampshire would be living near my favorite place, Mount Washington.
He had wanted to move back to New England after being in Oxford, MS for so long. He had hoped to come to Connecticut (his home state) this summer and I'd pick him up at the airport. Anytime I mentioned I went hiking on some trail he'd know everything about it - he had an incredible memory and was very well-rounded in his knowledge. We could talk for hours on the phone. As everyone knows he had a clever wit, and as cynical he could be at times, he was a very warm and empathetic person to those he associated with. Always supportive and complimentary.

Since 2004 when I met him here, he's always had his ups and downs with illness. I know that in early June he was typing with one hand, but he kept writing. I wish he had made it back here. He'd want to be on Mt. Washington.

He always kept telling me to post here again, especially in the Acronym Game thread, and it kills me to post here now. I am shocked and in tears to lose him as a friend. I am sorry for those who enjoyed his posts here and were friends with him too.

This is his Mahler site: http://www.geocities.com/mahleritewebsite/

Goodbye Mak, bear hugs to you.

* Thank you Argos for emailing me. I know Mak thought highly of you. (:

I'm not even trying. Keyboard needed a good washing anyway. I'm going to really miss that big toothy T-rex. I just hope the internet lasts, so we can still enjoy his thoughts.

Thank you Maksutov for welcoming me to this board, sharing your love of Japanese monster movies and, of course, your beloved Mahler.

Suddenly a reminder that whilst we critique the lives of the stars our own time is short and fleeting.

Fly true, Ceratosaur.

I can honestly say that I am speechless. This is terrible news, and even though I never knew him as well as some here, his insights into all subjects were always appreciated.

He will be missed.

You would know the secret of death.
But how shall you find it unless you seek it in the heart of life?
The owl whose night-bound eyes are blind unto the day cannot unveil the mystery of light.
If you would indeed behold the spirit of death, open your heart wide unto the body of life.
For life and death are one, even as the river and the sea are one.

In the depth of your hopes and desires lies your silent knowledge of the beyond;
And like seeds dreaming beneath the snow your heart dreams of spring.
Trust the dreams, for in them is hidden the gate to eternity.
Your fear of death is but the trembling of the shepherd when he stands before the king
whose hand is to be laid upon him in honour.
Is the shepherd not joyful beneath his trembling, that he shall wear the mark of the king?
Yet is he not more mindful of his trembling?

For what is it to die but to stand naked in the wind and to melt into the sun?
And what is it to cease breathing, but to free the breath from its restless tides, that it may rise and expand?

Only when you drink from the river of silence shall you indeed sing.
And when you have reached the mountain top, then you shall begin to climb.
And when the earth shall claim your limbs, then shall you truly dance.

Kahlil Gibran

We will miss you Mak...

Always the good ones...

Anyway, I'll terribly miss your posts here Mak.

Oh, there's someone at your place you should meet once. I'm sure you'd get along fine. Don't know what he thinks about Mahler, but always in for a Dvorak.

Down here, I'll try to keep them fixed at 33 1/3 in your honour .

I hope you'll have it good there, and I'll remember your name for when I get there. I'm sure they'll have noted an "aka Maksutov" in a footnote somewhere.

Farewell.

We'll all miss him very much.

In addition to astronomy, we had some great exchanges about classical music including a discussion about Prokofiev's rarely heard Symphony No. 2. When I saw his name in a thread, I knew it was going to be insightful and fun!

Heartfelt wishes to his family and friends.

Default Mak..Big Daddy

I am still shocked since I received the news early this morning. First news to welcome my ordinary working day.

He was a Big Daddy to me , when times I'm low and need someone to talk , he's there always ready to share what he always say his Big -Broad Shoulder for me.

When I was a newbie here , and He shared some words of wisdom even though and I hardly know him. He even shared his personal experiences, just as like a Big Daddy .

I'm full of tears for the sudden death of you , Mak.
I will surely miss your humor here in Baut.

So long, till we meet again to where you are now.

I didn't know him well. Certainly not as well as I'd have liked.

He will definitely be missed.

Good-bye, Mak.
