All I saw yesterday was "We will remember you. . . " on the index, and so I thought "Not another comedian!" Turns out I wasn't too far wrong. . . . What a total bummer. I've got to admit I'll miss him, even though I was supposedly on his ignore list. . . .

I too enjoyed his posts on music--too bad he never had time to finish rerecording all those old 78's he was sitting on.

And I never realized he was a famous American football player besides! (Wikipedia: Paul Zukauskas) What a life! He was a true polymath!

This is sad news indeed. I'll miss his posts.

My condolance to his family.

Sure, he had the size for it, but I don't see how he could be more than a guard. He couldn't catch or throw with such short arms.

This is terribly sad news.

The only consolation is that there's no shortage of good things to say about him.

I knew him best for his humour, including the amazing puns. Some of them were based on references that I didn't get, but I once received a PM from him offering to explain any that I didn't understand.

Whenever you saw his name appear in a thread, you knew the post was going to be witty or wise or both.

Knowing that there won't be any more from him is hard to take.

I had trouble with that link (wikipedia isn't letting us link directly for some reason), but when I searched through wikipedia, well, I don't think it is the same person, that person was born in 1979. Might be a relation.

He will never be to far from our minds, when we write anything on BAUT well will always think of what "MAK" will say when you have posted, and smile to yourselves.

Paul did play football, I am trying to find in my millions of messages he sent me what position he played, they had a strange name too, because of the strange body ratio.

I have not been here long enough to really know him. However, in every message board or usenet group I read, there are always a few people whose posts I read even if I am not actively following the thread; he was on that short list for me on this board. May his memory be eternal.

Nick

Not sure my 1st post showed up.

I'm sorry to know this. Didn't know Maksutov all that well (I'm still fairly new), but did enjoy his replies in threads we both commonly posted in.

My sincere condolences to his family and friends.

It's unfortunate that it's only through loss that one truely appreciates all the things that were taken for granted. You will be missed, Mak.

You know, we'll have to set up some sort of rotation to provoke the occasional pun thread in his honor.

Moose, I don't believe we have anyone that can fill those shoes.

Although Mike Alexander may do well at filling the chair, provided that it is on wheels.

I think that, if there are enough of us trying, we might make up the puns of one Mak. But it would have to be a lot of us.

When I first logged on yesterday evening, the first thread in two sections was about this, and I had a PM. I knew he'd been ill, so I knew what it was. I was sobbing before I opened either thread--or the PM.

Unhappy

So sudden and sad!

Maksutov was always sure to bring some humour into a discussion. How precious that is, in these times!

From Hamlet
The undiscovered country, from whose bourn
No traveller returns, puzzles the will.

I know me and Mak did not get along all the time but we had some fun with puns. He seemed to have had a long and interesting life working on a number of projects and we will forever have those stories as long as there is computer memory. Man this is hard to take for someone I only know through a monitor.

He had all these in-codes. One time I was lost for an entry in the SF Literary Quote Contest, finally found one and posted it. Instead of just giving the answer he wrote "Dipping into ADV again, eh Mike?" Cracked me up. I knew that he knew I had been down in the basement, looking at my Wall of Old SF, and just grabbed Ellison's old anthology, 'Again, Dangerous Visions' and picked a story.

I keep hearing a deep distant bell these days.

And now here!

Mak responded to many of my posts and his
friendly musical authority was greatly
appreciated. We had many laughs on this
strange electronic tavern! For some reason
I had a good going over on the ACRONYM game
a few weeks ago but it was delightful.

Its going to be different now Mak but if you
still have some spiritual reach I would much
like to see some television commentators have
a sudden choking fit the next time they
state we are all living longer!

Now I think the forth symphony of Mahler
will help.
