It has been quiet recently I think. Relatively.
Now many will be trying to make up for your
going, Mak. Perhaps you might nudge a few
spacecraft for me. You know what I mean.

Actually many did, but AFAIK always in the negative way. Asimov's "The Naked Sun" comes to mind. "The Machine Stops" even more so. Positive aspects of remote socialization I think no one foresaw before it came to be.

Yes, definitely--at least so the name doesn't get used again by someone else.

I wonder if the Mods and Administrators would hold that title for our friend?

Or would they like an angry crowd in front of their castle with scythes and pitchforks?

This is terribly sad news. Mak invariably wrote with knowledge, humility and a tremendous sense of humour and I always read his posts with great pleasure.

I'll miss you, mate.

I have gone to the gates of the fortress with a white flag and requested our knight be made into an "HONORARY" member, I shall await the news for his new title to be given forth!

Fraser has said in the past that nobody's name is getting deleted, except in very unusual circumstances (spammers and the like). Besides the PR nightmare, there would be fairly serious technical issues as well if it were tried on someone with a lot of posts.

It would be good to do some kind of memorial for Mak, beyond this thread, but I'm not sure breaking open a new posting title is... I'm really not sure what word would accurately describe what I'm feeling here.

As far as I know, this is the first time anything like this has happened. I doubt Fraser or Phil has set up a different type of account to for something like this. I'll see.

This is very sad news. I will miss his presence here.

Fear no more the heat o' the sun
Nor the furious winter's rages;
Thou thy worldly task hast done,
Home art gone and ta'en thy wages:
Golden lads and girls all must,
As chimney-sweepers, come to dust
Fear no more the frown o' the great,
Thou art past the tyrant's stroke;
Care no more to clothe and eat;
To thee the reed is as the oak:
The sceptre, learning, physic, must
All follow this, and come to dust.
Fear no mote the lightning-flash
Nor the all-dreaded thunder-stone;
Fear not slander, censure rash
Thou hast finish'd joy and moan:
All lovers young, all lovers must
Consign to thee, and come to dust.

I am so bummed right now. Mak made a point to say hello to all the newbies he could, and I was no exception. He had a clever wit and an endless supply of smilies.

RIP Mak, you were one of a kind.

With 30,000 plus members, it's an actuarial certainty that Maksutov was not the first person to die on us. He's just the first that we know about. . . . Just leave his account alone and his handle will be "retired". (Just watched Bladerunner again last night; don't think I like the sound of that . . . .)

As far as I know about this system, it does not know about Mak's terminal departure. Unless he gets banned (I might donate a pitchfork or twenty-some by mail) or Fraser fiddles him manually out of the database, he will just stay as a senior member - who is somewhat unlikely to log in again. His name will never be reused here (I think it is a primary key in the database).

An honorary member he is in our memory and by his posts for all to read.

And even among semi-regular/non-lurkers, that is probably correct. I'm having brain-lock on his name, but there was a British fellow who had cancer pretty bad and stopped posting quite some time ago (maybe back to BABB days), that I'm afraid probably passed away. Not to take anything away from Mak's place among us.

There are places I remember
All my life though some have changed
Some forever, not for better
Some have gone and some remain

All these places have their moments
With lovers and friends I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life I've loved them all

I'd second all that, and am beginning to think that it may be more and more revolutionary. Probably worthy of a discussion in a seperate thread.
