Oh, wow. I just got back on after a hiatus and I had no idea. Man, some of the best and cleverest stuff on BAUT came from Mak.

Makes me wish there really is an afterlife. It's sad to think of a light like that going out.

His light still burns bright in many of us NCN, he is sadly missed but not forgotten.

This would have been the post that made Maksutov's day. His response to this post would have been the post that made the day for the rest of us.

I'm quite sure he'll have the quote above on a tile somewhere in his new place by now.

maybe a few of Mak's best posts here could be a reminder of what he was capable.

Anyone want to post a favorite Mak post?

I PM'ed him last fall about someone who seemed to have a hard time keeping the subject on track. His reply was

"It's like throwing discussions into a blender."

I had no idea this happened. Wow...

I remember seeing Mak around. Didn't know him as much as others. I do recall that he was one of the greats around here, though.

He's now part of the Earth's matter again.

Just remember; at the end of the day, he's only resting...

Beautiful plumage, that Mak.

I, too, have belatedly come upon this sad happenstance. You will be sorely missed by us all Mak. You had a great sense of personal integrity to go along with your humor. Farewell. pete

Mak and I were wondering how long it would take an ex-poster to get banned. He wrote:

>I'm on the horns of dilemma re whether it should be wagered in hours or days.

Gut feeling says hours.

What's the winner get?

Or would it be the loser has to post something embarrassing?

OWOTO, we got us a real "winner" here. It's like shooting fish in a barrel. Or frats under a keg.<

I don't have a particular quote to add, but I will submit this thread as one I go back to fairly often to learn from Maksutov's wealth of musical knowledge.

Default A Dear Friend!

May I please pay my humble respects and offer my deepest heart-felt condolences to Zukauskas family.

Mak’s passing has been shocking and sad for so many of us here, who have known Mak over the years. It is painful speaking in the past tense.

Mak, our dear friend, was ever effervescent, witty beyond redemption, a wonderful, helpful, erudite man. His posts here reflect this. As, no doubt, does his life, for people who have been close to him. Who have loved him. Who have shared every day with him. Inimitable Mak!

The Zukauskas family have the good fortune to have had Mak as a grandson, as a son, a brother, a husband, a father, (and dare I say, (as he has passed away, so unkindly early in his life)) a grandfather, an uncle….one of their own Zukauskas!

We at BAUT, have been lucky and honoured to have known Mak. He had neither a bad bone in his body nor a bad thought in his soul.

God, or this Supernatural Being, wanted Mak near Her. Right away! To make Her laugh!

Being a near-Buddhist, I respectfully borrow this and offer for you Mak:

My life is fleeting and finite and I do not know with certitude what tomorrow has in store for me. But in the transitory boundaries of my existence is the timeless flow of Amida's life. In the finite sound of my Nembutsu is Amida's voice of Compassion, tirelessly calling me. Like a small stream that enters the mighty current of the great river, so does my insignificant life in the Nembutsu, join the majestic flow of Amida's Infinite Life.

Reverend Kenryu T. Tsuji

And this:

Namu Amida Butsu

The Nembutsu is the sound of the Universe.

It is the sound of the wind
as it rustles the leaves;
It is the roar of the waves
as they rush toward the shore;
It is the song of the robin, the whippoorwill
and the chorus of cicadas on a summer evening.

The Nembutsu is naturalness...
The first cry of the baby
as it emerges into the world
from the darkness of the mother's womb;
It is the powerful cry of independence
of individuality, of selfhood;
But it is also the great cry of awakening
to its dependence on something greater than self...
for its sustenance.

The Nembutsu is the proclamation of the Buddha...
"Above heaven and below heaven,
I alone am the World Honored One."
It is the ultimate declaration of life;
I alone hold my destiny in my hand
leading to perfect Buddhahood.

When I touch the heart of reality,
It is Namu Amida Butsu...
What else can I say?
When I truly share someone's happiness,
it is Namu Amida Butsu;
And in that moment of deep grief
over a loved one's death,
it is just Namu Amida Butsu.

Namu Amida Butsu...
it is the song of gratitude
not of my finding the Buddha,
but Buddha finding me.

Reverend Kenryu T. Tsuji

In Gassho, Mak!

I thank you, for sharing so much of your self with us, Mak. And making us happier.

In our hearts.

I know that everybody's posting poems etc, but I just thought that this song by the Beatles was somewhat appropriate. I was just looking these lyrics up a couple of days ago, before I found out about Mak.

Words are flying out like
endless rain into a paper cup
They slither while they pass
They slip away across the universe
Pools of sorrow waves of joy
are drifting thorough my open mind
Possessing and caressing me

Jai guru deva om
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world

Images of broken light which
dance before me like a million eyes
That call me on and on across the universe
Thoughts meander like a
restless wind inside a letter box
they tumble blindly as
they make their way across the universe

Jai guru deva om
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world

Sounds of laughter shades of life
are ringing through my open ears
exciting and inviting me
Limitless undying love which
shines around me like a million suns
It calls me on and on across the universe

Jai guru deva om
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Jai guru deva

At the end of the day, Mak was an information system(atomic, neural, whatever). His interaction with the rest of the Universe meant that his information became part of the rest of the Universe(the people he knew, the flys he swatted etc.), and this is how we are part of the Universe while alive, and this is how we are part of Universe, and thus God(sorry to mention the G word), when we no longer have a pile of atoms, presents in the Universe.

I woke up this morning, and I had the feeling that Mak had been in my dream. With that picture of him on the first page. I can't remember if it was a good dream or a bad(well a lot of my dreams aren't that great), but the feeling I got was that Mak was grumpy(probably found out what a looser I am,. ;-) )but it was a feeling of great energy, positive energy, which was how I felt about him). Probably I'll remember the dream later..

Long may your words fly out like rain into a paper cup, Mak.

I too have only just discovered this sad news. What a loss!

I also appreciated his posts, and will miss his contribution. We are diminished.

Is there any way we can forward these tributes to his family?

Jon

I was looking through some old posts and Mak always liked to post images (often ones he photoshopped) in response to someone's comment. I always thought these funny.

This was in a thread about Phil's Bad Astronomy book and Moose lamented:

So Mak made this for Moose:

In a thread about Gene Ray's Time Cube and the Cube Curse, Mak responded with:

Mak wasn't overly fond of cats, so in a cat thread with cat pictures (this was mean!) he responded:

Not to disparage Sam, but there was a testy thread where Sam was talking about a movie he hadn't seen and it just kept going on, so Mak posted:

Well, there's more as you know, but he obviously enjoyed doing it as well as quoting Monty Python, Groucho Marx and Mel Brooks - "No Running Gags!"
