Default Some help on Paypal insurance and the like please

I recently bought a pair of second hand speakers online from a UK based shop (shop also exists physically). As the shop has its own repair service, I thought they knew what a properly working speaker was like.

Anyway, to cut a short story shorter: I payed a large sum of money for the speakers, got them, found that one was working but repaired by an amateur and the other one simply was blown. I paid using Paypal (deal had nothing to do with ebay though).

Now, what to do?

I've mailed the shop about the speakers and said I'm looking into the options for this problem.

I've mailed the speaker manufacturer to ask whether a blown woofer is reparable and what that would cost.

And of course all that comes on top of a day filled with problems...

When using paypal, you are offered the choice of having them take the money directly from your checking account or from your credit card. If you chose credit card, you may have some recourse through the card company. If you chose bank account, I don't know what paypal's policy is.

The situation has evolved a bit. Can I have the company refund the money (including shipping, twice) before I send the speakers back?

They've been less than correct with selling them and with responding to my remarks (or this would be the first speaker to burn through during shipping...), so I'm not really willing to pay another 100+€ and lose the speakers before having seen any money from them...

Probably not. But if you receive an RMA (return merchandise authorization), and they don't refund your money, you can both take them to court as well as dispute the charge (almost always successfully, with an RMA) with your credit card company.

Unless you're handy with some simple tools (screwdriver, soldering iron) and don't mind installing a new driver yourself, try to get your money back.

These are Tannoy 15" DC units, you don't want to install a new pair. We're talking 4 figure numbers here for a pair of new units.

But all ended well: I proposed the shop paid me back the price of the speakers, so net I paid only shipping and paypal costs, but got to keep the speakers. They agreed.

So now I've got 2 broken speakers, for which I paid a reasonable price (the shipping) considering their condition. I can get them repaired, which will cost an awful lot of money, but they'd be literally as good as new (everything except for basket, magnet and tweeter horn is replaced), and it will still be significantly cheaper (make that "less expensive"...) than buying a new pair.

So I'm happy with the outcome. I don't know when I'll get them repaired, nor which cabinets I'll use for them, but I'm happy with the outcome. I got the units and don't feel cheated anymore.

I consider the case closed. Whether to close this topic or not depends on whether people still have something to say about it
