When I joined this forum, I joined with the intentions of teaching other people things.
Yep.
I was going to enlighten the folks on the internet.

It's funny.. looking back over this very short time, the magnitude and scope of what I have learned from BAUT instead.
In fact, I don't think I've ever really taught anyone anything here.
Ok well maybe I've provided excellent examples as to how NOT to behave but...

I mean I have never intentionally taught anyone anything.
Ok well maybe I have- a few bits and pieces...

Ok, anyway the point is that it's nothing significant.

I've learned a great deal about science and learned a lot of my misconceptions.
But that's just Data Retention.

The other things I've learned are lasting.
How to think more critically.
How to examine things when I want to believe otherwise.
I've learned a great deal about myself as well.
What a great many of my faults are. My temperament. How easy it is for me to put my foot in my mouth.
How often it is that I think I'm sooo right and yet sooo wrong...

I joined this forum so I could teach others. I joined thinking I would post occasionally once a Week in the CT forum and that's it.
I knew when I joined that nothing would change.
I knew when I joined that I was joining to contribute, not to take anything away from it.
I knew when I joined that I had a good grip on reality.
and man..
I didn't know squat.

But you are wrong Neverfly you have contributed in many things, yeah! foot in mouth isn't just for the cows over here in the UK. I joined totally by accident but I have learned quite a lot while I have been a member of BAUT,I am glad I have found it .
I am not sure if I have made any good contributions here at all, but I have made many friends here and hope to remain here for a very long time to come.

Well, right now you're teaching me how to be patient in the face of complete woo woo.
Also, your posts are invariably witty. If that's not contribution, then I don't know what is...

You helped me stay out of trouble on this forum. Sometimes my big mouth gets into my hands, on the keyboard. You helped me to sometimes overcome that.

I'm new here. I still have a lot to learn.

I learned that sci-fi books and movies are not the best foundation for science.

I've worked around thousands of people, in my years. You folks here refresh my experiential faith that most people are good.

Nope, because you have answered a great number of questions raised.

Who doesn't like a little jalapeno in their beans? I'm confident your slight extravert behavior helps us intraverts feel much more comfortable in jumping in when we aren't extremely confident in our comments. You serve as a catalyst for the times when the bigger answer is out there. You're usually a wheel, but when not, you're at least the grease.

Yep, me too. My grammar has greatly improved also. I now know several big words, and a few I invinted.

Ok now hold up.

This is going in an entirely different direction than I intended.

let me try this again...
Looking around the board last few days, I have noticed many new members. Many of whom have ideas.
One of whom seems to have just been permanently removed.

But I'm seeing a repeat in that.
How we join thinking "Here we go! I'll show 'em"
And end up going, "Woooowww!! There's SMART People here!"

I was trying to express my gratitude to the board- but also, to serve as a note to the new members who have been joining recently.
I try to relate as often as I can.
Usually because I screwed something up and I know how it feels,
But I've managed to get on some ignore lists. Managed to get off some of them again only to wind up on new ones.
I've managed to give some Moderators gray hairs.
I've managed to cause sane rational people to experience emotions that had been forgotten since their caveman days.

And none of it was what I expected.

Ok I'm not making any sense here.

The point is- I'm star struck by this board sometimes. Because it's like walking into a classroom ready to instruct only to find you've walked into the Discovery Center and feel like a kid again. Big brain just shrunk.

And that's what I was trying to say- to get those who have joined, are joining and maybe will join in the next week or so (because after that this thread will explode and die as my threads always do...) to think about the opportunity presented.
Not just here. Here may have been a catalist in some ways for me but...
In Life.
To stop thinking you know so danged much and learn how much you don't.
To examine, poke and prod at yourself and question whether or not the things in your brain make as much sense as you thought they did yesterday.

For the record, an excellent point.

This is a great forum.

Many smart people, most of who are willing to share what they know (or they wouldn't be here, I think).

But also many people who are witty, questioning, irreverent, cynical, reflective, ... I can go on. Just too many positive qualities to list completely.

So, I get what 'fly is saying. When you join up and participate, if your eyes and mind are open, you will be the better for it.

When I joined this forum , it's not by accident , but someone shared the link to me. At first , It didn't look interesting , because I was not really fond of Science and Astronomy except back in the school days where we have field trips to Science Museums and Discovery Centers .

After a month of lurking and reading here, I decided to register and the rest is history. After that , I have been more interested now in this field. It's like becoming a kid again , starting to appreciate more the Stars and the Planets , and the whole Astronomy field.

This forum is ONE of a kind , compare to other Forums ( Science, Physics and the like ). I'm not brownosing, It's letting the others know especially the lurkers and the new members that they have made a good decision to be here.

Thanks to the person who gave me the link and introduced me here. You know who you are .

And as for you Neverfly, you did improved a lot .
Man , you're popular .

Things I have learned from neverfly:
1)how far you can push the moderators
2)stereotypes about Texans are wrong because some of them are worse

Do you remember Mr T; they had a hard time getting him on a plane too; perhaps there are similarities.

The former wrestler?

yes, if we want to get Neverfly to a new world/land of thinking, then we have to drug him and then put him on a plane; and when we get there he wakes up and gets all cross..."you crazy fool", is one of Neverfly's Mr.T's favourite lines...

I think he will be after he gets his SLEEP and awakens to see this thread is already replaced by Mr. T.
