Default "Gravitation cannot be held responsible for people falling in love".

Do you know/understand what did he really mean?

Falling in love is not at all the most stupid thing that people do — but gravitation cannot be held responsible for it. (Albert Einstein)

I am guessing that he meant something like; though it's not the most stupid, it's not the smartest thing either, but there is nothing to blame but you. That's my take anyway.

It's a bad pun that tries to make a witty comment on the inadvisableness of trying to apply physics-thinking to feelings.

I think we have a better chance at forcing people to accept Pi is 3.14, then we do understanding dynamic emotional states. One could claim my statement is just as arbitrary as his, but whatever meaning he held behind his words will remain an Egyptian tomb which remains to be unearthed one day....just not today.

Al E was trying to be a misunderstood crotchety old man, unfortunately, he makes too much sense. He was contrasting emotion and physics, like Henrik said.

Then again he may have been attempting to show the error of linking Cupid's arrows to William Tell shooting an apple to the apple that fell on Isaac Newton. It's correlation, not causation.

Well , if you know the meaning of Gravity you'll know what Einstein means.
