It's either katakana or hiragana*, so probably the multi-lingual pack for windows or whatever browser you use.

OT: Would it be silly of me to believe that memetics are a dangerous thing? I have this weird phobia or natural repugnance toward popular things. A lot of my time is spent trying NOT to keep up with the times.

I'd assume you'd just need a Mandrin typeset. I don't know my "far east" languages, so I'm not sure exactly which one it is.

I had to be talked into reading Harry Potter out of just such a belief. It turns out I was right about Twilight, though.

I agree, that one is common. There's plenty of others that have be un-conditioned from me because of autocorrect. I always type them wrong, but never see them because MS magically reads my mind and prints what I'm thinking rather than what I'm typing.

But; I do get irritated by people who intentionally do that for effect.
It's kind of like the demise of "Funniest videos" when people started staging things for video, and doing such a poor job.
And now, it's who can outdo who on Youtube.

Yeah; but since it's Japanese, you have to hoohah yourself while making your mouth move in obviously different patterns.

I resisted Harry Potter for a long time as well, for the same reason, but did read them (and enjoyed them) eventually. My daughters warned me off Twilight, though, and they're even in the target demographic and liked other series in the genre (one of them even bought the "And then Buffy staked Edward. The End" T-shirt).

I'll third the "didn't wish to read Harry Potter, but finally did and enjoyed it" movement. G/f is a huge fan, thus I eventually had to read them. Glad I did, but have no desire to re-read them. Of course, we have to go see all the movies too. Many of you know how I feel about going to movies, particularly long ones.

Twilight would never join my "to read" list, even if it had rave reviews. The other one that everyone says I need to read, but I wont, is the 'Dresden' series. I'm sure I would enjoy them, given the reviews from people who's taste in such things I trust. But at the same time, I have no desire to read them, nor do I feel that I'm missing out by not reading them.

The only people I personally know who put down Harry Potter are those who have never read the books or only read a non-English translation.

My employee's wife, a book seller(!), detested Harry Potter, never having actually read any of it. After my finally having convinced her to try it, she almost knocked me over rushing to get volume 2, then 3, then 4, etc. Having caught up by the time volume 7 was issued, she was at the store at midnight to buy it and stayed up all night reading.

Talk about Saul and Paul.

When I first read them, it was while I was studying banned books in college ten years ago. (First, not quite but almost; I'll have moved to Olympia to go to college here ten years ago September. Second, yes, they've been banned. They're among the most frequently challenged books in the country. Magic, disrespect for authority, Harry's failure to consult adults, that obnoxious Malfoy kid not getting his comeuppance for far too long, and so forth. It's really kind of a scary list.) I was finally convinced that I couldn't do my contract without reading them, and my roommate was willing to loan them to me. She regretted this later, because I forced her to ignore her schoolwork so she could finish and pass on to me the fourth book. Also, it meant I was getting credit for reading them while what she was supposed to be reading was Aristotle.

I just looked to find some Harry Potter on Amazon to test the phenomenon (which I don't really believe, having seen three of the ubiquitous films), but then I remembered that now it will think I like Harry Potter and recommend all the books to me, laying to the side my other preferences. I did that once already, looking for an Isaac Asimov book.

I spent the week of July 5 - 11 as an adult volunteer to help our troop of Boy Scouts at a summer camp on Colorado.

There was one teen from Latvia visiting his cousins. In the prior 2 weeks they quickly signed him up to the Scout troop so he could attend the camp, also.

He used that phrase (FAIL!) all week long, but I never heard it from his cousins. That leads me to believe he brought it from Latvia.

Up until the first time I heard it from him, I had never heard it used.

In fact, Draco Malfoy never "gets his comeuppance." He comes out of his whole business with Voldemort essentially unscathed.

Adding "h" to the end of words where it's not needed out of some misplaced notion that it looks "cute", such as "planeh".

Not to get too much into spoiler territory, but I'd say a lot of what happens to him in the last book or two makes a serious mark on him that might be comeuppance. Still, even if we go your way, which does have its merits as well, that doesn't make it better for the people trying to ban it!

Though I used to do it myself, the habit of breaking the post being responded to up and responding bit by bit...especially for long posts. Too often, I see that and think, no way I'm reading all that! I might scan it for something new, but rarely read the whole darn thing.

I find it an intelligent way to do things. It's easier to keep clear what you're responding to. And, in some cases, who you're responding to. I and several others quote more than one person in any given post. I have also found that it helps limit "but I didn't say that!"

It is sooooo tempting to slice that up and respond in a humorous manner.

Remember that time Gillianren bad-mouthed everybody about the quotation thing, then she said something like, "I didn't say that!"?

Fans of a fictional character who only want to discuss who they could beat in a fight.
