Technically the county is not Ireland. It's either the Republic of Ireland, or Eire. But the island is Ireland ....

What the heck is up with this wrongly percieved upward trend price trend for fast food?
There has been a considerable amount of not very well informed speculation about inflation in the US media. Often if follows the lines of: public spending up therefore inflation, while ignoring that private spending has fallen off a cliff. Unfortunately the US is in little danger of inflation. Australia has had a much larger stimulus in relation to the size of the economy per capita than the US, it has much smaller financial problems and its economy has been doing much better, even so, the reserve bank has decided that all that is required so far to stave off inflation is a quarter point increase in interest rates. The US still has a long way to go before that will be necessary. In fact, with unemployment around 10% it looks like the US easily handle considerably more stimulus without inflation becoming a problem.

That's also true for most of the other eight countries. One of them is officially the "State of whatever," but others are mostly "Republic of whatever." In English, that is. I'm aware of one of them (the largest by population) that has a completely different name in the language spoken most commonly by its inhabitants.

Are they on the value menu meal? I'll take the anchovies, but allosaurus? I'll bet it tastes like archaeopteryx, er, chicken.

Default BK Franchises Sue Burger King over $1 double cheeseburgers

I feel bad about this, as I thought they were still making a nickel off it, so I was taking advantage of the promotion 3 or 4 times a week, ordering nothing more than the burger.

I am usually not hungry enough to order a "value meal" nor do I want a drink. So often I just order a junior burger. I don't feel bad about it though, and it is less than once per week.

Why is it that the "small fry" is larger than the large fry when I was a kid? And why is it that the "small drink" is 16 ounces? the "value meal" comes with mediums of both, that' 20oz of sugar! and half a pound of grease!

I don't know where you're getting small fries, but at most fast food places I've been to lately, leaving aside one local place where Graham and I split a large, getting one much smaller would be getting about four fries.

The marginal cost of a serve of fries is only a few cents. Most of what you actually pay for the fries goes towards advertising, labour, packageing, utilites, capital costs and so on and as time has passed, these costs have tended to increase in relation to the actual cost of the food. Increasing the portion size is a cheap way of providing extra "value". Unfortunately this can have some negative consequences.

In some places, the burger without the fries costs more, as you don't get the "meal" deal. You have to wonder about a food item with negative value.

Agreed. Though cross is right about the sodas.

(yikes -- I've been away from my hometown too long. I can't believe that I didn't type "pops")
