Default Surveyor dust measurements

How far away from the lander could the 1966-1968 Moon Surveyors do measurements of the dust thickness?
I mean, a "there is almost no dust here" would not be so reassuring to the human astronauts if it was caused by the dust being blown away by the Surveyor's landing rocket...

If there were more than a couple feet of dust blown away by the descent engine, do you think perhaps the panoramic images might have shown that the craft was in a bowl?
