I recently read a great book by the same name, if this sounds at all interesting to you I would urge you to get a copy (library or bookstore).

William Smith discovered, among other things, that outcrops many miles apart can actually be the same formation (same age, same rock, same fossils) and that it is possible to create maps that show this.
