Default Richard Dawkins wins Author of the Year Award

Richard Dawkins, noted biologist, atheist, and Professor of the Public Understanding of Science at Oxford University (and recently voted one of the world’s top three intellectuals) has won the “Author of the Year Award” from the British Book Awards for his book The God Delusion.

Quote:
The shortlist stage provoked a spat between two eventual winners. They were the atheist scientist Richard Dawkins, Readers Digest author of the year for The God Delusion, and the comedian Peter Kay, whose The Sound of Laughter won Amazon biography of the year. Dawkins was quoted as deriding Kay, whom he thought had written of believing in God because he found the notion comforting. But in a letter to the Guardian, Dawkins said he had been set up by a "hired publicity machine" and apologised.

It seems perfectly consistent to me that Dawkins would deride someone for believing in God because it was comforting. It would take only five minutes to find a quote with that sentiment. So it seems to me that his "apology" and reference to a "hired publicity machine" is a tad disingenuous.

People smoke tobacco because it's comforting.
They over eat to excess because it's comforting.
To believe in a god because it's comforting is just as human, but that is no reason to defend any of these habits.

I'm not handing out any warnings here, but we cannot discuss religion here. I'd recommend just dropping the topic, as it would be difficult to discuss Dawkins' most well know ideas without discussing religion.

I predict this thread will be closed soon. Please prove me wrong.

I think he has earned the award, his books on evolution have been really interesting. Too bad his writing style tends to be boring...

Oh, I and really do like his idea of memes.

Very impressive Mr. Dawkins ...

With the incredible powers of your mind, reason, and logic, you have come to the same conclusion as the cow has in the field ... that life is limited to itself and its surroundings. If the cow has reached this ultimate understanding with no effort whatsoever ... I don't quite know why you are so esteemed as an author ....

Consciousness proves the soul, mind ... and the Creator ... as it is transcendant to the powers of nature. Even a simpleton like me can reason that out ....

Oh I forgot .. you guys think consciousness comes out of a bowl of chemical soup or a bunch of computers piled high enough ....

Indeed.

Did you happen to hear Terry Gross interview him on Monday's "Fresh Air?"

Or the Tuesday interview with Francis Collins, author of The Language of God?
"Theistic evolution" from a scientist working on the genome project.

Another form of "god delusion?"
