Default Hawking going to Canada

WATERLOO, Ont. – Canada's profile in the international physics community got a huge boost today as renowned "superstar" cosmologist Stephen Hawking accepted a research post at the country's "crown jewel" of theoretical physics study.

It was the lesser of two evils...:

Hawking had also been offered a position by CERN, however, he felt resigned to accept the Canadian offer saying, "I enjoy black holes but I don't want to study them up close and personal."

I do hope he's joking about that. He does have a sense of humor, but that's the kind of off-hand remark that can add fuel to the anti-science fires.

Considering how well the woo-woos vet their sources, it's still going to give them something else to say against the LHC.

I don't think that story gives the whole picture.

The Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics was founded in 1999 by a donation of $100 Million Canadian by Mike Lazaridis. This year he added another $50M to that. The institute is actively recruiting cosmologists for teaching posts at all levels. Mr.Lazaridis is clearly determined to have one of the World's best campuses for teaching and research in cosmology for Canada. Jolly good I say, for such an inspired investment in academia.

At the same time, Prof.Hawking is due to retire from the Lucasian Chair next year after thirty years in the job. No doubt he is looking for a new stimulus at such a new institute, and no doubt a valuable stipend. His new post is a visiting professorship, rather than resident. See: http://www.perimeterinstitute.ca/

Perimeter Institute was at first located in a former bar, former post office, called "Time Square." After the cosmologists moved in they renamed it "Time and Space Square," actually changed the sign and everything.

The neighbourhood around PI has had a problem with sauced U of W students on occasion causing property damage (stolen lawn ornaments, trampled flower beds, airborne beer bottles etc) but no one was more rowdier than the cosmologists, constantly writing equations on every flat surface they could find.

Since the cosmologists were relocated to their new futuristic 1970s style digs, things have mellowed out. With Hawking around they're going to think that they are "all that" again.

No one who lives near PI will get any sleep with all that heavy thinking going on.
