Default speed in pipeline

After reading about the gas pipeline problems in Russia/Ukraine

I was wondering at what speed the gas travels at while in the pipes?

anybody know?

That was a harder question than I had thought. I found this site, which indicates the speed is 8 m/s.

For some reason I thought it was slower than ~18mph.

Tee hee....8.0m/s = 28.8 km/h (multiply by 3.6, 1h = 3600s, 1km =1000 m)
18 mph = 28.8 km/h (multiply by 1.6, 1 mile = 1600 m (approx)

Pete

***Edit, I just realised that Ara's post said slower than ~18 mph

What I read was "I thought it was slower: about 18 mph" (instead of 8 m/s, which obviously are the same)

Sorry Ara

No problem. I just used google calculator to do it for me and it came out to 17.8mph.

I did think I remembered hearing that it was slower, in the neighborhood of 3mph, but maybe it's different in the US and I don't recall where I heard it or the context.

I'd have though the volumetric flow rate would be more important...

For most purposes, perhaps. But brianok asked about speed, maybe because it was important to know how fast the gas was going to get to Sarajevo once it was turned on again.

Well, the gas in the center is flowing much faster than near the pipe wall... but over distance, it all mixes fairly well so than on average, the mean figure is correct.
