Default 200-year-old Aftershocks!

Source

Quote: "...the present-day temblors are getting smaller with time, which is a characteristic of aftershocks, Stein said. And when larger quakes do occur, they happen at the corners of the fault section that scientists think broke during the 19th century earthquakes, a pattern that suggests these are aftershocks, Stein told LiveScience."

The longevity of it all makes me wonder what the earthquak patterns over the last century would look like if they were speeded up into a 30-sec movie. I'll bet the patterns would prove interesting!

That is the first time I have heard of aftershocks lasting so long after a major quake. That would be some comfort for the folks along the Mississippi River if it is accurate. The construction of buildings in this area is not designed for quake resistance, and a large quake would be truly catastrophic.

Unfortunately, despite massive historical flooding, many homes in that area aren't designed for flood resistance (stilts), either.

But yes, I'm certain they're relieved they don't have to worry about an earthquake in that area anytime soon.

Perhaps not from the New Madriz Seismic Zone, but there's still the Wabash Valley Seismic Zone.
