We have the "evil" Romulans, who lie and steal...and the "good" Federation, who lie and steal.

Never established that this was why they thought the Romulans evil. I thought it was the deliberate destruction of human colonies and outposts as seen in Balance of Terror.

As to the Fed's lying and stealing, its called espionage. The Romulan commander was entirely correct to have charged the Enterprise officers with it. Pity (for them) they couldn't hold them long enough to do anything about it.

I tried to track this down, but even the die-hard Star Trek fansites don't seem to know. The ones who mentioned her at all just said "unknown bit actress".

It is stunning, I've even tried some fansites dedicated to the women of Star Trek written by women and can't come up with a name.

Even websites with lists of people who weren't even on camera don't list her.

Jason and Waarthog...I understand and agree with both of you.

I don't know any better way to explain it other than just saying that I never really "got into" the political side of Star Trek in any of it's incarnations. Just wasn't my "cup of tea".

Oh, yes. I loved that movie. I was rolling on the floor from some of the inside jokes/Star Trek references. I second the recommendation.

You clearly have never been directly involved in war. For right, wrong or indifferent, if you go to war, you better be ready to cut the other guys' heart out and eat it or you're a fool for being there in the first place. (your objective is to win)

What matters is what you become when the war is over. If you do not return to being the "good guys" then your concerns are valid. I reference WW II. Horrid attrocities were committed by all sides. In the end, Truman set about cleaning up Europe and Japan. Stallin set about trying to out tyrant Hitler. See any parralells?

One of my favourite episodes was The Corbomite Maneuver, I was watching a tape of From the Earth to the Moon the other week, I noticed in the credits for the episode Spider, about Apollo 9 and the development of the LM, the name Clint Howard who played a character called Paul Lucas. Is that the same Clint Howard who played Balok in that TOS episode? I couldn't pick him out in that FTETTM episode, does anyone know who he was?

My other favourite TOS episodes are;

Balance of Terror, as has been said earlier a brilliantly tense episode with a scene stealing performance from Mark Lenard.

The Doomsday Machine was another edge of the seat climax.

The Changeling, was it's plot re-worked into Star Trek The Motion Picture?

Yeah, the same. Same as the kid in Gentle Ben too. (bleh)

Ron Howard is his brother so he always gets Clint parts in his movies. What a great guy.

Clint Howard was also one of the White Team flight controllers in Apollo 13.

He's the flight controller next to Tom Kelly in the support room at Mission Control who explains to the NASA bigwig what could go wrong if the LM's descent stage helium pressure gets too high.

He plays one of the Grumman people: the bald engineer with Tom Kelly who explains to NASA Deputy Administrator George "I'm going to need the official Grumman position on this" Low the problem with the super-critical helium tank on the Spider. "Now that would not strand them; they'd still have the ascent engine. But... it would kill the mission."

Now if you're really curious. Clint Howard

A rather long and varied career.

I'd agree that this is one of the worst ones. I do like it, however, since that episode embodies the 1960's.

A long time ago I remember reading that the maximum distance of the transporters was 16,000 miles. So in order for the Enterprise to:
a) remain within transporter distance or
b) keep on station over the primary plot location
Scotty would need to drive the engines to avoid falling from the sky.

Technically they are orbiting the planet but what they are really doing is hovering over a spot and "orbiting" at whatever the planet's rotational speed would be for that distance in space.

Oh, almost forgot thread topic:

I don't recall that happening except for twice in "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield" and once in the third movie, when they actually did blow up the ship, though there was just a skeleton crew that escaped via the transporter before it happened.

But I vaguely remember the destruct code was something subtle and obscure, like "Zero, zero, zero."

Zero, zero, zero, destruct zero.

That same destruct code word for word would be replayed again in Star Trek III.
