Default Apollo 13 10th anniversary edition

There is a new two disc set of "Apollo 13" out. It is touted as the Anniversary edition. I assume they mean the 10th anniversary as there is an anniversary every year. There is both full screen and wide screen versions. I got the wide screen.

It is really good. It has interviews with the A13 crew from the time of the incedent and interviews with Lovell and his wife from just reciently. They also have brief interviews with the lovell kids. (whom are adults now)

There are multiple voice over commentaries for the movie itself. There is one by Ron Howard, another by Jim & Marilyn Lovell. In the Lovell commentary they point out where Ron Howard took artistic license and where he nailed it true to history. For instance, the argument between Hayes and Swigert in the LM never took place. On the other hand, Marily really did tell the newsies they couldn't put an dish tower on her lawn.

The "making of" doccumentary is much better and more thoruough than on the earlier release. They actually show some of the filming that was done on the "vomit comet".

Walmart has it for $13 & change.

Sounds pretty good. Might rent it for the commentaries with Lovell.

Fortunately I never bought it, just taped it off of cable soooo, time for some shopping!

Thanks for the heads up.

edit: Turns out the wife already saw it at Wallyworld but didn't buy it. Perhaps she needs a bit of 'correcting' (for you The Shining fans).

Most of the features of this were on the previous DVD release, this one added the 15/70 DMR cut on the second disc, and an extra documentary.

Most of these feature are/were on the previous release.

I only have the original vhs release of the movie. For dvd, I plan on spending the extra bucks and buy spacecraft films treatment of Apollo 13.

While there is some overlap, the two disk set that I just got has quite a bit more. I now have both and have compared them.

Which means?

(trying to decide if I want to buy this for a third time--bought it in a two-pack VHS with the excellent PBS documentary, and have the original DVD).

You and I must have different first releases. Mine has the Ron Howard commentary, a brief "making of" and some trailers but nothing else. hooodathunkit?

As far as I know there was the "Collectors Edition DVD" with the trailer, lost moon doc, lovell and howard commentary. Which I have.

there is an earlier release that probably only has the howard commentary, which is what you have.

There is also the DTS release which lacks any special feature, except for the DTS soundtrack.

I think they should follow the LOTR lead and make an extended edition.

And the wife still hasn't got me my DVD. Guess I'll have to watch the tape again...or go get it myself.

with the exception of the isolated score, all of the features of the "Collectors Edition DVD" were in the LaserDisc release. The isolated score was in the LD release.

Yup, it's the collector's edition DVD (and later) where the Lovells' commentary appears. A must-hear, I might add. Those who haven't yet had a chance to listen to it: run, don't walk, and find yourself a copy. It's fascinating to hear them reminiscing and pointing out things like "this incident really did happen", and "that looks a lot like our living room back then", and "you know, the way Hanks is fidgeting just there, I just realized that's exactly the way you do it, Jim!" "Oh yeah?" "Yeah, I didn't realize he'd picked up on that."

The Lovells' also point out their cameos, which is pretty cool in itself.

Score!

Edited to add that I've now watched the movie and the Ron Howard commentary. I didn't really want to sit through the movie a third time today so I'll save the Lovell comentary for another day.
The Lost Moon documentary is pretty good too. Lots of stuff in this set, well worth $14.

Don't forget to check out the "Making Of" featurette. In the anniversary edition they show a lot more than on (at least my) earlier edition.
