Default The Best Spacecraft in science fiction

What is best looking ship ? Which is the meanest/most-powerful
Which has the worst physcis and would not survive 2 seconds in a real astro journey ?

I checked some web pages and I'll ask what one is your overall favourite ?

http://www.physicsdaily.com/physics/...nal_spaceships
http://www.thelogbook.com/log/
http://www.absoluteastronomy.com/enc...spacecraft.htm

Battlestar Galactica have good ships and Andromeda looks great, but the original Enterprise has to be one of the best ships in sci fi.
For accurate space battles and science I would go for those big Allaince ships in Firefly that don't make any zapping sounds when they open fire. I liked the realism of space craft in Kubricks 2001, I also liked the look of ships in the Alien movies.

The toughest ship must be the Lexx or Vorlon ships in Babylon5

I think most ship designs overall are unrealistic except for some in books/films like ArthurC.Clark/Kubricks Space Odyssey
however I think those giant pyramid ships in Stargate look very cool 8)

I like the new Battlestar Galactica so I'll go with that. It's big, bulky and intimidating. It looks like an actual warship.

Lexx gets my vote as the the most disgusting starship ever designed. That was a very strange show.

A plausible spaceship, based on known physics would most likely be shaped more-or-less like an actual rocket, wouldn't it?

In terms of scale: Thistledown, because it's carved out of a huge asteroid and linked up to a whole miniature universe.

For threat posed to an opponent, I'd have to go with the Polkji. Compared to other ships in the Uplift universe, it's not so tough, but it's the most powerful one that's actually described. Between the monomaniacal Jophur crew and the ship's hardware, I wouldn't want to have that thing chasing me.

Edit: Then again, the Heart of Gold tops everything. It can turn a dreadnought into a piece of toast...

Coolest - Shadow Dreadnaught. If I saw one of these things, I would soil my pants.

Realistic - Star Furys

Un-Realistic - Any fighter out of star wars.

Stupidist - Lexx

Hmm... I've only seen a few B5 ships, and I don't have much idea of their scale.

For unrealistic, though, it's a toss-up between the Death Star and any Star Trek ship.

For stupid, try Andromeda. That ship has weapons that can destroy a planet, or even a solar system... But of course those weapons won't get used, because the three-part AI will act up for some reason.

Pretty much any of the "first Ones's" ship's from Babylon 5. I always love the shadow vessels and some of the Vorlon ships

Also, the Battlecruiser unit from the Starcraft video game is really cool, especially when you see them in the videos at the beginning

Later

Not lasting...easy the Starlost, also known as "The Ark". Cdn SF, from the early 70's, the show lasted one season. The pilot episode started off well, the series dropped off from there.

Edit: Actually, reading the background to the show, this could have been much better than what it ended up being:

Quote:
The Starlost premiered on television loosely based on a concept created by Harlan Ellison. Meticulously and lovingly devised by the brilliance of Harlan Ellison and thought out to perfection by Scientific Advisor Ben Bova, the series promised to be a monumental step for SF television. Ellison had contracted great SF writers such as A.E. Van Vogt, Frank Herbert, Joanna Russ, Thomas M. Disch, Alexei Panshin, Phillip K. Dick, and Ursula K. Le Guin to write storylines that would be scripted by the best Canadian writers available. Douglas Trumbull would be Executive Producer and create the special effects via the Magicam system.

It looked good. It sounded good. It fell apart.

If the USS Voyager somehow dropped into this universe, it would either fall apart or turn into a rather bizarre-looking oyster.

(Remember Voyager's mobile engine pylons? Ya gotta love huge, hulking, high-tech starships with moving parts that aren't even needed... )

Not that I would ever want to defend such a turd.....

Voyager have use of the moblie engine pylon thinys when, as you might remember ( if like me you invested a portion of your life watching all of the episodes ) Voyager was able to enter an atmosphere and even land. So moving the Warp whatever they are calleds may make the ship sligghtly more aerodynamic.

Have to agree, B5 had the coolest ships.

I loved the Star Furies. A great use of 3d combat in space.

My favorite ships would have to be the Martian craft in "War of the Worlds" (Movie version). Those ships just cried out 'Were gonna kick your butt, and there's nothing you can do about it'

You mean the Brood War opening? That is certainly cool. I generally prefer Protoss carriers though; they certainly pack more firepower, and they're more original too.

Almost anything by Peter Elson (as seen in the Terran Trade Authority handbooks) looks great.

As for this post's obligatory Night's Dawn reference, I think the Adamist starships deserve some realism points. True, Hamilton uses a very technobabbly warp drive, but he gives them good, realistic limitations. His idea that the warp drive only works for totally spherical ships sounds that the sort of limitation that would apply in real life; and he is one of the few authors to talk about fuel and reaction mass. While I'm on the subject, are posessed Blackhawks mean enough for you?

Borg Cubes are mean, powerful, look scary and are totally unrealistic. 3 out of 4 isn't bad...

The ship from Galaxy Quest does a good job of spoofing the standard Trek ship design, while looking very good in its own right.

For realism, I'd vote for the moon rocket from Apollo 13. It's a crazy design, but it almost seems like it could really work... Otherwise, how about the solar sails from Arthur C. Clarke's Wind from the Sun for beauty and realism. Or a Baxter Big Dumb Booster.

Finally, a beauty vote for any ship with wings (e.g. Klingon cruisers, X-Wings). Pointless and stupid, yes. Yet somehow they look right. Probably a prejudice from seeing too many soaring birds.

"Slightly" says it all. Voyager is aerodynamic compared to a lot of Trek ships, but it still has all the meneuvering capability of a rocket-propelled cow. In atmosphere, I'd say that Voyager could easily be overwhelmed by a squadron of F22s.

It always reminded me of the bridge scene from Apocalypse Now. Very cool.

Mean? Heck yes.

Powerful? They're bloated hulks, and most of them don't even have any armor...

Look scary? Maybe... Until you notice they're full of holes.

(The exception to that is the tactical cube... Those things have armor on most of their surface.)

Totally unrealistic? Definitely... Except for one feature, which is that they have their bridges in their centers, instead of on the outside! As stupid as the Borg are otherwise, I must give them some credit for that.

Bridges in the centre? Going back to watching all of the Voyager episodes once again, The borg ones were the most forgettable.

I thought the whole point of the borg ships were that they were completely decentralised, so they had no bridge (or perhaps multiple bridge areas).

Lexx is completely plausible compared to the all-time great ship:

Nell from Battle Beyond the Stars

That's Nell in the background, the silvery ship with the rather interesting appendages. Nell, piloted by Shad, designed by Hugh Hefner...
