I saw AI on HBO. It is certainly a very emotionally appealing movie, but I just cannot help to laugh at the ending part. In the end x000 years later, the humans were gone and the earth was covered in thick ice and the Chrysler building was still standing proudly in the ice. So was the submarine and the blue fairy that had been submerged in water for x000 years, and they did not even have any deposits on them.

anyone seen it?

You are correct. For whatever reason, humans became extinct and the androids (or whatever it was they were called in the movie) survived.

You liked that movie? I thought it was a 3hour long emotional root canal! And yes the 'Aliens' were the descendents of mankinds robotic servants.
