Default Lost (SPOILERS probably)

The first series has just finished airing here. I loved it - the most compelling thing that's been on TV since Twin Peaks. Great characters, good acting, excellent script, and the music is superior to what you usually hear on TV. I'm not surprised it cleaned up at the Emmys.

So, what did y'all make of it? The only explanation that makes any sort of sense to me is that the plane passed through some sort of portal into a parallel universe! One where the laws of physics are similar to ours, but not quite the same; where children have psychic powers (which explains why the Others want Claire's baby and why those weirdos in the boat take Walt), and where iinvisible monsters stalk through the jungle, etc.

Getting off the island won't help them. Even if they succeed in crossing the ocean, they won't find themselves in the good old US of A; instead they'll wind up in a crazy parallel America where George W Bush is president for life!

I heard that the show has been picked up for six more series. I can't imagine how they're going to maintain our interest for another 100 or so episodes. Surely not with a group of people messing about on an island? I hope they don't start to water it down.

Part way through the searies here in the UK.
My own weirdy theory (probably disproven already) is that the island is some how sentient and feeds off of the fear of those near it. the reason the plane crashed? someone spooked by the turbulence. They survive because of someones fear of being abandoned. The polar bears? Well there were the bears in a comic on the plane. Perhaps that also set someones subconcious off.

whatever the actual explaination its making for good tv

I just hope the writers have something in mind and aren't just making it up as they go along.

Well... Walt seems to have the ability to "make things happen". In one of the flashbacks he was drawing a bird. He tried to say something to his mother and Brian, and when they ignored him a bird flew into the glass door. At another point (in the first few episodes, I think), Michael and Walt are arguing about Vincent, their dog, who was still missing. Michael tells Walt that he'll go look for Vincent as soon as it stops raining. Not 10 seconds later it suddenly and completely stops raining.

I read somewhere, although I can't remember exactly where at the moment, that they have about 7 seasons worth of material. I'm not sure how true it is, though.

According to an interview in SFX (a UK magazine), the writers seem to be making it up as they go along, with some general guiding idea. At least, they did not give the impression that they had a plan.

The final episode of Lost:

Could it be that she was the sister of the boy in Kansas
who loved the girl with the tattered shawl who was the
daughter of the maid who had escaped from the pirates?

Was there ever any explanation of how a heavily pregnant woman was allowed to board a plane flying from Sydney to LA? Man, I sure hope they're not just jerking us around. I'll be miffed, to say the least, if they are!

It just occurred to me that this thread should be in Off-Topic Babbling. D'oh!

Default "Raised by Another"

(As always, spoilers ahoy!)

In "Raised by Another", Claire is told by a psychic that she has to be the one to raise her child. She fights that destiny until the psychic finaly relents and agrees to send her to L.A. to meet some parents who can adopt the baby. The trick is, the psychic insists that she has to take Oceanic Air Flight #815. While talking to Charlie, Claire realizes that the psychic knew the crash was going to occur and that it would ensure that Claire was the one who rasied the child.

I would assume that the psychic found a way to make sure Claire could get on the plane (It can't be too difficult. I knew a girl in High School who held an Indonesia citizenship because she had been born in Indonesian airspace)

Should it? Is it science fiction or isn't it?
