Well...I'm on the fence about what they've done to the old corn snack. I rather liked the rough-hewed, "this stuff's neutronium and we can barely work it" look of the original. The bent tail, though, bothered me even as a youngster.
Plus it's dangerous to start rethinking the look of the things. Who is to say what looks both cool and appropriate today won't look terribly dated a week from thursday? Better to keep as close as possible to the originals -- just give them a higher gloss.

Errr...
Much as I would like to see, say, some "bigger" establishing shots (imagine seeing the Doomsday Machine actually at work, for instance), one of the biggest things I admire about the original series is how tightly it is scripted and edited. Very few wasted motions there. I think it would be difficult to slip in two minutes of SFX without destroying the rythm of the episode.

I liked the CGI clips. I don't really need the "bugle look" but I would have liked a more worn look. I also wanted to see the shuttlecraft nearing the Doomsday Machine. I loved that episode, but there were a number of things I could have done without - the scale of the shuttlecraft and Enterprise versus the machine was way off in the original. You see the matte shot as the shuttlecraft takes off, and the model for the Constellation ... well ... I wouldn't mind seeing a finished version of that episode with optional CGI.

Heh. Just watched "Tribbles" through. Yeah, the model work is a little shaky there. Those nice models shown in the link above would not look out of place in this episode. No huge design changes; just a slightly more complex surface treatment and some cleaner details here and there.
Another nice thing about working on "Doomsdsay Machine" is that some of the music has been professionally re-recorded already!
