Alias, eggs, and toilets

I heard a rumor (well, a friend who works on the set actually told me) that the TV show "Alias" would have a mention of standing eggs on end during the vernal equinox (if you have no idea what I'm talking about, see here).

Turns out there were two Bad Astronomy mentions in that scene. From a transcript:

Rachel Gibson is out with some friends.

BALD GUY: All right. During the Vernal Equinox, you can actually balance an egg on its end.

RACHEL: No, you can’t. It’s a myth.

BALD GUY: No, it’s not. Listen, it has something to do with the Earth’s axis and the alignment of the Sun. Trust me. I Googled it.

Rachel’s cell phone rings.

RACHEL: Yeah, okay, just like water swirls the other way in toilets in Australia?

BALD GUY: It does!

Rumor has it

that a writer for the show knows about my site. Maybe we'll see something more substantial in the future...

How cool. Maybe now I'll start watching the show! I know it's supposed to be great, but I haven't fit it into my schedule yet.

Well, the Bald Guy's right and Rachel's wrong there. You can balance an egg on its end during the Vernal Equinox.

The myth is that you can't do it any other time.
