Default Firefly

Just to ket people know that I watched the first (and only) season of firefly

We were going to watch Serenity but the copy didn't work (it was completely legal, I assure you) and we haven't had a chance to watch it yet

I'm really looking forward to it and can't believe it got cancelled. How on eath did it manage to get a feature film? It's funny to see some of the crap they put on instead of a show like this (same thing happend to Family Guy and there is a great sequence in the first show back where Peter lists all the shows that were put on instead)

Later

IIRC the main reason Fox canceled firefly was a poor cost to income ratio. Good show, bad marketing (I didn't hear about it until it was canceled!), so-so time slot....and it cost, I think, some 2 million per episode.

Throw in Fox's tendancy to stick with things to long...cou-simpsons-gh...and the fact they like to ditch things that don't hit it big fast...and you've got all the info you need.

Bummer....just watched a couple of episodes with a buddy tonight...got him hooked also

Pete

Add: $2 000 000 / episode? Wow! That explains alot about the cool special effects and great sets!

Wait, $2M per episode? Is that right? That's huge!

I don't know, Sienfeld was getting paid $1 million an episode, and I bet Friends cost more than $2 million an episode too, just to pay the actors.

Hm. I guess I'm just grossly misinformed about these things. Wouldn't be the first time.

If you
  • Have seen and enjoyed the show,
  • Have the bandwidth to DL about 65-90 Mb, and
  • Don't mind parody,
Then visit http://www.mosquitoverse.com and watch the show.

Wasn't just bad marketing... fox really made some boneheaded decisions with the show. Most importantly, they messed up the order of the shows... the 2 hour pilot episode was actually shown AFTER the series was cancelled. (They ended up airing the second episode "train job" first.) So much for properly introducing the characters.

Yes, but those shows were wildly popular and advertisers would pay enough to support those cost. Since Fox never allowed time for Firefly to build an audience, it never was able to match income to cost. Star Trek: The Next Generation and Babylon 5 were mediocre at best in their first season, and neither hit their stride until the third, but they were given time to build a large viewership.

At the moment, Serenity is Amazon's #3 best selling DVD, after Revenge of the Sith and March of the Penguins. This, five days before its release.

I still have hope that the franchise will return in some form. Anybody who wants to help, the best thing you can do right now is buy the Serenity DVD. And buy extra copies to give as presents, or donate to your town library.

How did Firefly get a movie? Dedicated and obsessive fans who wouldn't (and won't!) give up on the show, a cast that loved making it, and above all, Joss Whedon's conviction that there was more to tell about the 'verse, and unceasing efforts to find it a home.

I just returned from the Big Damned Flanvention in Los Angeles. Had an awesome time! Let me tell ya, Browncoats are an incredible bunch, and Nathan & Co. are truly cool and nice people. Not one supersized ego in the bunch. I got to spend some quality time with Morena, Alan, and Summer (at various points) and somewhat less with Jewel and Ron. Not much at all with Nathan, Adam, or Sean, as things worked out, and Gina wasn't at the con.

My first fan convention experience of any kind, and it was a hell of a thing.

P.S. Pete, recognize my avatar now?

Yeah $2 million per episode for a SF show doesn't sound that high. Ten years ago, Star Trek episodes were running between 1.5 and 2 million per episode, and the ST: Voyager pilot got $23 million. And I think Space: Above and Beyond averaged around $2 million per episode as well. So it's not like the cost was insanely high or something. I imagine income wouldn't be what they expected, but that's marketings fault. Deciding to toss out the pilot for a while, giving the series creator just a few days to write a replacement, taking the show off the air for three weeks due to baseball, the list just goes on.

Bear in mind it cost $2m per show when only 14 where made.

You only have to build a big expensive spaceship set once.

And you have to pay people to design the CG models, but you don't have to pay the computers to render them every week

*grin* Certainly in the old Battlestar Galactica, that was true.

I'm pretty sure that the people who create the CG models also compose the special effects shots for each episode that uses them, so there's not a lot of savings there.

My parents were (are) big fans of the Firefly series. I hadn't seen it, but based on their excitement, I got excited for Serenity. Saw it opening weekend. When I found he Firefly box set on sale at HMV for $30, I picked it up for my parents for Christmas. WHen I found the Muppet Show DVDs, I picked THEM up for my parents instead and cracked open the box.

I watched the series in a single sitting. Incredible show. It brought me great sadness knowing that it was the only season.

A bit of a dissapointment for me today. I wathced the the first "new" episode of family guy from season 3 and Peter mentioned all the "quality" shows that Fox hand begun and cancelled during the family guy hiatus.

Unfortunatley, Firefly was one of the show.I am sad...as I love both shows. I'm hoping that they were simply listing all the shows that were cancelled, not just the "crappy" ones

What an incredible coincidence. I too have a classics exam on Tuesday. I don't suppose the name Robin Osborne now induces nightmares in you, too, does it?

Agh! Yes! Bloody pots! Always with the pottery!

Out of curiosity, are you in CLST 101? Or are you in a second year Classics course? If we've been in the same room 3 times a week for a semester, I'll be weirded out.

Seriously, the writing feels like it's fresh out of a pottery kiln itself.

And yeah, I'm in CLST 101, and you're not the only one who's left a little loopy by this revelation, classmate!

My highlighter doesn't even like the book. It turns it from neon green-yellow to dull yellow when it dries. Give it a try.

As for being in the same class, well, that's quite the coincidence, isn't it? I guess I'll see you in Grant at nine tomorrow... weird.
