Don't know how they'd film it. The "action" only lasted a few minutes. I suppose it would focus on "human interest" angle, with the teacher and her selection as the first to go into space. In short, it will be everything United 93 wasn't.

That's kind of been done.

From the article linked to:

An investigative drama in the vein of "The Insider," "Challenger" examines the role that Feynman played in the investigation into the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger. Motivated in part by his uneasy conscience due to his participation in the Manhattan Project, Feynman is determined to ensure that there will be no institutional cover-up of the negligence that led to the tragedy. "Challenger" uses the investigation as an opportunity to humanize the famously eccentric physicist.

I wonder who they'll get to play Feynman?!
...dare I suggest Robin Williams?

EDIT: oh I missed the fact they already cast David Strathairn in that part

If its the same one I saw recently, they
commisioned good graphics to show how the
o-rings would not seat when cold. Only they
forgot to include the putty that transmitted the
gas pressure! This is a spoiler I suppose but
it was spoilt anyway! And the names of the other
commission members are omitted. Truth gets
trampled in the quest for drama!

Oh no!
This just about immediately tells me that this movie's going to be bad, since it's going perilously close to fiction right from the beginning with the description skewed by a bias against big government projects.

I'm currently reading his own letters1 where he answers the question of his participation in the Manhattan Project several times, as well as his memories from the Challenger investigation2.
His main motivation for the latter seems to be that his wife convinced him that if the answer required unconventional thinking, he was the only one likely to find it, the conclusion he himself came to was known at the engineering level that it was likely to be the o-rings, but they needed a high profile person who couldn't get fired to confirm and tell about it due to the management systems of NASA.

I'll highly recommend both books.

Unless he can talk creditable bluecollar brooklynese, it's going to sound really wrong to anyone who's heard Feynman's voice.

2) What do you care what other people think? : further adventures of a curious character, ISBN 0393320928

I'd rather see a movie about Apollo 7, STS-26 or STS-114.(RTF)

Thanks for those references HenrikOlsen, I keep meaning to read more of his books since i've only read the wonderful 'Surely You're Joking, Mr Feynman!' so far.
I share your misgivings about the film too

P.s. just checked imdb, apparently David Strathairn was born in Frisco but now lives in upstate NY. Not really familiar with his work (or Feynman's accent) but if the script/story is poor it won't make any difference

I got them by interlibrary loan, one of civilizations greatest inventions.

I don't know how it works in the UK, but in Denmark interlibrary loans are free, with a common online catalog of all books in publicly accessible libraries with an option to order diretly to your local library, which will then email you when they have the book so you can pick it up.

I've no idea either despite having a local (all be it small) library down the road. I've tended to buy or borrow most of my books. Even so I've still got over 20 on a 'to read' pile sounds like a great system though!

Strathairn is an excellent actor. A real chameleon. Last year he got an Oscar nominationfor his dead-on portrayal of Edward R. Murrow in Good Night and Good Luck. Though I am not even remotely interested in a Challenger movie (unless it's about Apollo 17), I would be interested in seeing how Strathairn would play such a different character.

At the other end of the character spectrum, he was pretty good in a supporting role as the Commissioner of women's baseball in A League of Their Own.

You're dead to rights about being a chameleon, he's a fantastic character actor.

I'd put him on the list of actors where I've never seen him be bad in anything. I saw him in a bad movie once (can't remember what it was called), but he was still excellent.

But can he play the bongos?

I have no doubt that he can--and if he can't, he can act like he can play 'em!
