Default Summer Blockbusters

Superman....looks interesting. Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor...could be a "rollercoaster of thrills and chills" (sorry, pre-empting a movie critic here). Don't know if I'll bother, though.

Ghost Rider...well...I like the comic book, so I'm hoping it'll be better that the live action "Spawn" movie, which I thought was awful.

Akira (live action)...wait, that's only in my mind

what else (other than X-men and DaVinci code)?

Pete

The only other movie that would interest me is Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest

Other than that, it's wait for the DVD.

Um, that's not going to be a summer blockbuster. The release date on that was February.

I'll probably end up seeing Superman, because although I don't actually like Superman much, I'm a huge Kevin Spacey fan. I'll definitely see Pirates. I definitely won't see Da Vinci Code. And I think that's about it.

I can recommend The Descent, should it ever come out in the US (it's supposed to this summer). Excellent British horror. Utterly preposterous of course but all the better for it. However, I have heard that the US distributors are planning to cut the twist ending, and leave it with a "happy" ending for American consumption. If they do I will spit. Copiously.

Also, though this is coming from someone hopelessly infatuated with Emily Watson, so understand my bias, the Aussie western The Proposition is excellent.

And The Road to Guantanamo. Good, if biased, docudrama about three British detainees at the centre. Was shown on British TV last summer.

As for the rest:

:-D:Try and stop me seeing this
:-): I'm certainly interested
:-|: Maybe, maybe not.
:-(: I don't wanna
>:-(: I am offended by this movie's very existence

The Break-Up: Watching Jennifer Aniston post-Friends feels a bit like staying over at someone's house after the party's finished. The zing isn't there. Vince is cool, of course, but he really needs Ben Stiller to play off. :-(

Cars: Pixar are capable of doing less-than-perfect films (I'm talking to you, A Bug's Life), and this movie, so far, has not wowed me. I just don't like cars, and the story seems done into the dust. Nice that they got Paul Newman on board, though not being a current resident in the US I have no idea who "Larry the Cable Guy" is. :-|

A Prairie Home Companion: Meryl Streep! Yay! Lily Tomlin! Yay! Lindsay Lohan! Ummm.... :-|

The Omen: The most pointless remake since Gus van Sant's shot-for-shot redo of Psycho, and this is coming from someone who liked Red Dragon. From the trailers, it just looks like they've done the original scene for scene, without adding anything new to it.>:-(

The King: Gael Garcia Bernal as an incestuous, murdering drifter named Elvis. It must be good. :-)

Nacho Libre: Jack Black as a priest turned Mexican wrestler. Again, with a high concept like that, I can't see it failing. Not really my cup of tea, though. :-|

The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift: The most pointless sequel since, well... 2 Fast 2 Furious. Or maybe Basic Instinct 2, or XXX2, or Dumb and Dumberer, or Son of the Mask, or Dirty Dancing 2, or... :-(

The Lake House: Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock do a romantic comedy. Excuse me, but since when have either of them had a successful romantic comedy? :-(

Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties: This must have teleported in from some alternate reality, because in the one I'm living in, the first one bombed. >:-(

Click: Oh joy! An Adam Sandler comedy! Well, as I said above, I am infatuated with Emily Watson, which means I am obligated to like Punch Drunk Love, but still, a guy gets a "remote control" so he can rewind and fast foreward his life? How tedious is that? Christopher Walken is rapidly changing his persona from "truly terrifying demonic figure" to "guy who will appear in anything for a buck". :-(

Superman Returns: The more I see of this movie, the less I like it. I'll probably see it anyway, robot that I am. :-)

The Devil Wears Prada: Meryl Streep! Yay! Anne Hathaway! Um, well she's cute... :-|

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest: The first one was a blast, and this one looks, if anything, even better. Bill Nighy is a god and he looks stupendous in his squid getup.
:-D

A Scanner Darkly: Supposedly, this is the first Phillip K Dick movie to actually follow the plot of a Phillip K Dick novel. If so it should be pretty trippy. Like what I've seen so far. I can forgive the presence of Keanu if Winona and Robert "That wasn't in my pocket when I came in, I swear" Downey Jr are in the cast. :-)

Little Man: Every year, and every new Wayans Bros. movie, I get sicker and sicker at the thought of having once loved In Living Color. Still, the last one made $70 million, so I suppose this one will too. >:-(

Strangers With Candy: I know absolutely nothing about this movie, except its cast: Amy Sidaris (Elf) Stephen Colbert (The "This Week in God" guy from "The Daily Show"), Matthew Broderick, Alexis Dzenia (the nymphet from "Broken Flowers") Dan Hadaya, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Ian Holm, Kirsten Johnston, Allison Janney... It just goes on. :-)

Pulse: Apparently a remake of a movie that was quite good. In that case, I'll catch the original on video. Has the girl who plays Veronica Mars in it. Apparently. :-(

You, Me and Dupree: I couldn't even sit through the trailer for this movie. Do we really want to watch two hours of a guest who doesn't leave? >:-(

Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby: I've yet to convert to the Will Farrell fan club, but this one's got Ali G in it, so it can't be that bad. :-|

World Trade Center: The trailer for this was as sappy as a maple orchard. You'd think Oliver Stone would push the envelope at least as far as Paul Greengrass did, but apparently not. :-(

Snakes On A Plane: A movie so bad, it's been marketed on that very fact. Internet irony being what it is, the entire wired generation has taken this on as a kind of post-modern moon landing. Personally I'm going to stay away. I'm just not that cool. :-(

Clerks 2: Let Kevin Smith die already. He's only had one halfway decent movie in his entire career (Dogma) and that wasn't that good. If you want this movie done better, do yourselves a favour and watch Spaced. :-(

Miami Vice: Now, I think Michael Mann is a gifted, muscular filmmaker of the highest calibre. But do you think, when he's dead, people are going to remember him as "the guy who directed Heat, The Last of the Mohichans and The Insider, or as "the guy who created Miami Vice? Even as a kid I thought this show was a bit weak, with its cops all trying to be George Michael. So what's he doing going back to his past and remaking his own material? With Colin Ferrell, of all people? :-(

Little Miss Sunshine: No, not an adaptation of the "Mister Men" book of the same name, but a comedy about the decidedly creepy world of US kiddie beauty pageants. The trailer makes it seem like this year's Life Aquatic, and Alan Arkin goes completely bonkers in the trailer, which is good enough for me :-)

The Lady in the Water: So is this a horror movie or not? The trailers are veering from "It's a fairy tale!" to "It's a horror flick!" and back again so fast I'm getting seasick. M. Night hasn't impressed me recently, though I did like The Village more than most, and with Bryce Dallas Howard and Paul Giamatti in the cast I'll be sure to give this the benefit of the doubt. :-|

My Super Ex-Girlfriend: Uma Thurman was born to play a superheroine. I'll admit to having a crush on her since I was about ten, when Baron Munchausen came out, but even that's not enough to get me to see this. The trailer for this loud, crude, and vaguely misogynistic movie actually turned me off it. Ivan Reitman, what happened to you? :-(

Monster House: A cartoon about a house that eats people. Bring the kiddies! This looks like it just might be good, as long as dialogue like, "That must be the uvula!" "Oh, so it's a girl house!" is not representative of the whole. :-|

The Science of Sleep: Michel Gondry's followup to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind should be worth a look no matter what. :-)

The Illusionist: Edward Norton and Paul Giamatti. Enough to get me in the door. Magic in turn of the century Vienna. I'm watching the curtains rise. :-)

Idiocracy: Mike Judge's first non-animated feature since Office Space is supposedly dire. It concerns a man who wakes up in the year 3000 to find he's the smartest person in a world where everyone has become stupid. :-(

The Wicker Man: God bless Neil laBute. The world needs a decent misanthrope to remind us just how hideous we are. His take on the second weirdest movie to come out of the 70s (but no one will ever remake Zardoz... will they?) is intriquing in itself. :-)

The Return: This movie, directed by Asif Kapadia, who a year or so ago made an excellent indie called The Warrior, marks Sarah Michelle Gellar's return to the slow-burning horror of The Grudge. Could be good. :-)

Pathfinder: It was only a matter of time before someone came up with this one: its 1000 AD, and a Viking child, abandoned by his family in the New World colony of Vinland, is taken in and raised by the Indians. When the Vikings come back, he takes up arms against them and fights for his foster family. Yes. I know. >:-(

The Covenant: Renny Harlin has a movie out. You have been warned. >:-(

I Could Never Be Your Woman: Title as bland as mayo, but this movie marks the return of Amy Heckerling (Clueless, Fast Times At Ridgemont High) and Michelle Pfieffer. It also has Tracy Ulmann as Mother Nature. Ok... :-|

Black Snake Moan: As you can probably guess, this movie's meant to be pretty sexy. It's got Christina Ricci in it, so that's a plus. It's also got Samuel L Jackson in it, so that's another plus. It has Justin Timberlake in it, which is a decided minus, but it's directed by the writer of Hustle and Flow,, so, on balance, maybe I should check it out. :-|

The Black Dahlia: James Ellroy as retold by Brian De Palma. Loved LA Confidential, but have never warmed to de Palma's work. Scarlett Johansson's in it though. :-|

Riding Alone For Thousands of Miles: My favourite director, Zhang Yimou, finally stops making those silly sword and sorcery swashbucklers like Hero and House of Flying Daggers and goes back to the intimate family portraits he does so well. Advance word on this is really good, as to be expected. :-D

All the King's Men: Another remake. This one's got Jude Law, Sean Penn and Patricia Clarkson in it and is directed by the guy who wrote the screenplay for Schindler's List. Despite all that, not sure about this. :-|

Killshot: No, not the latest Van Damme DTV actioner, but an adaptation of an Elmore Leanard novel directed by the guy who made Shakespeare in Love. Didn't see that one coming, did you? :-|

Children of Men: Alfonso Cuaron, one of the most intriguing directors to emerge in recent years, offers up a scifi movie set in a future in which men can no longer, ahem, procreate. It has two of my least favourite actors (Clive Owen and Julianne Moore) in it, though they're both talented, I'll give them that. :-|

The Painted Veil: Yes! Naomi Watts in a love story! With Liev Schreiber!... Oh. Still. Edward Norton too. :-|

edited because I missed a week

So All the King's Men is officially a remake of the b&w one? Oh, dear.

We saw it in a college class I took. I asked if it would've made more sense had I read the book, and the consensus (it was assigned reading) was that it would've made less sense. Oh, dear.

So I'm not the only person out here who thinks Bill Nighy alone makes a movie worth seeing? Even in that loser Underworld Bill was a hoot. I'm delighted to see him getting some really fun roles.

No, you are definately not. I think I can safely say I'm the biggest Nighy fan...at least in northern New Jersey. It's so great to see him popping up time after time during the last few years. Man, STILL CRAZY...what a performance. And of course, his great little role in SHAUN OF THE DEAD (**CLANK!**...Sorry Philip!).

One of my cherished old videos(still not on DVD ) is a tv-movie featuring him as one of two brothers holding differing views in Germany during the Third Reich. Nighy chooses to join the SS and becomes right hand to David Warner(another personal hero!)at his demonic best as Reinhard Heydrich.

A little more on topic ....

I CANNOT wait for SNAKES ON A PLANE to be released, so that I can stop hearing about the sucker! Only an early 21st century, over-interneted, too-hip-4-human-interaction audience could make a concept this asinine a cult hit before it's even finished.

*Curses self because didn't think of that*

Love to see the Bill Nighy fans on here. I think he's just great. I own the BBC radio adaptation of Lord of the Rings, where he plays Sam. Absolutely brilliant performance.

Reinhard Heydrich was quite possibly the single most evil man who ever lived. Kenneth Branagh essayed him brilliantly too in the movie Conspiracy. Check it out. David Warner's in the new TV movie of Hogfather out this Christmas, playing Lord Downey. All indications are it will be stupendous.

Wow, parallax, that was quite a bit more detailed than my OP! I've no idea where you find all those titles. I don't go to see movies all that often, only the really big ones.

I've no intention of seeing snakes on a plane

I've been looking forward to "The Black Dahlia" since I heard it was being made. I saw "L.A. Confidential" when it was released, loved it, read the novel, had even more respect for the film, after realizing how much had been cut. This led me to read the rest of Ellroy's "L.A. Quartet", of which Dahlia is the first. I'm hoping that DePalma's directing and Josh Friedman's script, do justice to Ellroy's work, the way Hanson and Hegeland did with "Confidential". Dahlia is a fictional work dealing with the interactions of a few cops and others, against the backdrop of the "Black Dahlia" case. The movie casts Josh Hartnett, Aaron Eckhart, Scarlett Johansson and Hilary Swank in the main roles.

I'll be seeing Superman Returns - for two reasons.

1) My kids wouldn't let me not take them to it, and
2) I really like Kevin Spacey.

I'm waiting for Indiana Jones IV - supposedly starting up this year/next year.

I'll probably go see Prairie Home Companion, if for no other reason than to figure out how in god's name Altman managed to make a movie of it.

This sounds like the plot of a short story I read years ago. A Van Vogt or a Dick I think.

I'm sure you're right. It was by C. M. Kornbluth.
