The UFO itself wasn't discussed in that thread in any great depth, although we have discussed it on this board before.
In previous discussions I believe the consensus of opinion was that the object was, in fact, the Saturn IV-B booster, which was considerably closer to Apollo 11 than 6000 miles (despite the estimate of Mission Control).

Another Saturn IV-B booster has been spotted more recently, when it was at first identified as a Near Earth Object (which in a way I suppose it is).

Actually I think in the last one it finished with the object most likely being one of the panels that connected the stack to the Saturn IV. I did try and search for it, but... yeah.

That makes sense; especially considering the different shapes that the astronauts observed. In the film it looks cylindrical, but they also reported it as L-shaped.
A rotating semi-conical panel could appear to be roughly cylindrical and roughly L-shaped at different times.

I'm glad to hear that, PhantomWolf. I couldn't reconcile the image shown on telly with mission control's estimate that the booster stage was 6000 miles from Columbia and Eagle. It seemed to me that mission control would not lose track of where the spent S-IVB was and the item looked too large to be 6000 miles away (although that doesn't mean it wasn't).

If the object they saw was indeed a piece of panelling, it could easily be close enough to Columbia to be visible and yet not be detected by mission control. How precise was the radar tracking they used, anyway? And how much delta-V is imparted after shedding the second stage of the rocket?
