The UFO itself wasn't discussed in that thread in any great depth, although we have discussed it on this board before.
In previous discussions I believe the consensus of opinion was that the object was, in fact, the Saturn IV-B booster, which was considerably closer to Apollo 11 than 6000 miles (despite the estimate of Mission Control). Another Saturn IV-B booster has been spotted more recently, when it was at first identified as a Near Earth Object (which in a way I suppose it is). http://www.space.com/scienceastronom...ct_020912.html

Actually I think in the last one it finished with the object most likely being one of the panels that connected the stack to the Saturn IV. I did try and search for it, but... yeah.

That makes sense; especially considering the different shapes that the astronauts observed. In the film it looks cylindrical, but they also reported it as L-shaped.
A rotating semi-conical panel could appear to be roughly cylindrical and roughly L-shaped at different times.
