That is rather like a darker version of Rucker's White Light.

Well I just finished reading Pandora's Star by Peter Hamilton. I'm still debating whether I will continue onto the second book. He tells a good story but it's way to long winded. The first book didn't really close anything out, you are left hanging on most points, which I don't like. I expected the first book to finish up and then a new story line to begin based on where the first left off, but that is not the case. Seems it's really one overly long book that was spread out to two books to keep the page count lower.

It is a good story, but it could have been condensed into one book.

Finding out the second book is even longer than the first is not encouraging. I guess I will have to continue though, I'll just have to speed read through the boring fluff.

I'm avoiding Hamilton. I don't remember the name of the series, but he had a science fiction theme that morphed into a fantasy (bad ghosts coming back from Beyond), painted the characters into a corner, then finished it off with a literal Deus ex machina. What a way to cheat at an ending!

Also, it was long winded.

That'll be the Night's Dawn Trilogy http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Night's_Dawn_Trilogy
Yeah, I've heard those complaints before, some people do indeed feel that way about Hamilton (particuarly the long windedness) & I think they do have a valid point.
I though, do enjoy his stories overall.
Is this something for the Literary SF discussion thread?
