Scientists on earth pick up a signal from deep space that provides them with the design specs to build a new and powerful machine.
A for Andromeda & Contact This is not strictly SciFi but it was uncanny that these two films dealing with a similar theme were released at the same time Dr Strangelove & Failsafe There of course there are the big rocks falling from the Sky Meteor Deep Impact Armageddon Plus some other unmentionable TV derivatives. Then big lizards going on the rampage in the city Beast from 20,000 Fathoms Godzilla 1,2,3,4 etc etc Jurassic Park 2 Give me more time and I am sure I can think of some others Drilling vehicles that carry people deep below the earth where they discover a new world - I think that has been done more than once. Societies in space where the women rule - A fashionable idea in back in the 50s 60s & 70s but a bit passe and irrelevant now.

I just saw an interview with George Lucas who said he was influenced by the robot Maria when creating C3PO. He was responding to the question "Did you model C3PO after the robot in Forbidden Planet?" So maybe yet another linkage to the robot list?
