Default "In the Shadow of the Moon"

We Goddard employees got the opportunity to preview this marvelous film, which interviews many of the astronauts who went to the Moon while recounting the story of how we got there. Unlike a lot of other documentaries, it's focused much more on how the astronauts felt about it and how it changed them, rather than the technical issues. Anyhow, I strongly recommend going to see it if you get the chance.

Film Review – 'In the Shadow of the Moon'

Quote:
Countless documentaries have attempted to capture the essence of what it was like to fly to the moon during the glory days of the Apollo program. Some have been fairly successful, but usually still feature the standard talking heads and grainy umpteenth-generation film footage. One notable previous exception was Al Reinert's 1989 work, "For All Mankind." This was the first attempt to get Apollo footage onto a large theater screen, and is regarded favorably by most who had the opportunity to see it in that format.

Now, nearly 20 years later, we finally have a worthy successor in David Sington's "In the Shadow of the Moon." Unlike so much that has come and gone before, Sington has reinvented the Apollo documentary format. Where the earlier film left us wanting much more, this time around we finally get that which we've been waiting for so long. Beautiful and rarely seen footage has been taken from the archives at NASA, transferred to high-definition video, and given new life in a way never before imagined.

Thanks, TooSeek. I will surely get it. Two of my favorites are “From the Earth to the Moon” and “The Right Stuff”. Have watched them both countless times. (Although I always resent “TRS” treatment of Gus Grissom’s flight – it just wasn’t interesting enough that astronauts were “steely eyed missile men” who never flinched … BORING .

It was unfair to play up the rumor that he lost his nerve over a sinking capsule. Don’t think it happened … and if drowning (rather than dieing in space) did not appeal to him … can’t blame him.

Really doubt he would have been slated for (the first)? Apollo mission if NASA found him lacking in any respect .

But I digress. Sorry.

Not to mention he also flew the first manned Gemini mission and, had he lived, was supposed to stand a good chance at commanding the first landing.

I'll be sure to get it on video, as I don't visit movie theaters for personal reasons.

I got to see it in March when it came to my town as part of our annual True/False Film Festival. The director was also on hand after the movie for a Q&A session.
Really a must see!

Assuming it ever comes near me, I fully intend to see it, but I've gotta ask: How does it compare to For All Mankind?

I got a chance to see this over the weekend. It's only playing in one theater here in Phoenix which is kind of disappointing. I wasn't a big fan of the way the director shot the interviews (too close, the angle and lighting made it look like the guys constantly had tears in their eyes) but absolutely loved it otherwise. Mike Collins and Al Bean are just charming as all get out, Charlie Duke is funny, Buzz and Gene Cernan are a little more reserved, but being able to hear the stories these guys tell is just great.

There is one scene that cracks me up though, due to an editing glitch. When they are discussing the tension felt in Mission Control while Neil was trying to find a spot to land, and was only seconds from BINGO, they pan across the MOCR and there, in the front row, is Mike Collins. Classic! (to be fair, they note at the very end of the credits that some scenes were edited in from different missions to provide an overall emotion for the event being discussed)

If you get a chance to see hits on the big screen you absolutely should

D'oh. I suppose we may expect that "documentary" footage will soon be showing on every hoax-believer website in the Universe.

Ha! Good point, I hadn't thought of that. But we'll have ammunition too, they let the astronauts address the whole hoax thing (only for a few seconds each and shown during the credits, which I thought was fitting).

I saw it over the weekend too. And it is only playing at one place in Cleveland too (the art theatre). I agree completely with Kelfazin, generally a great movie. The interviews were great. My wife (not a big space buff) thought it was a little slow, but really liked the interviews and really liked both Bean and Collins.

Thumbs down

I saw it tonight, and I'm going to take the dissenting view here and say that it pretty much sucked. For All Mankind, IMHO is a much better documentary.

While watching it, I couldn't help but reminded of what Lovell's wife was told in Apollo 13 as to why the media wasn't airing the broadcast from the capsule prior to the explosion live, "You make going to the Moon seem like a trip to New Jersey." (Or words to that effect.)

I liked the interviews with the astronauts (though I could have done without them talking about religion as much as they did), but the rest of it just bored me to tears, and really, that's hard to do. (I like looking at the blueprints of the freakin' launch tower, fer cryin' out loud!)

For All Mankind manages to beautifully capture the wonder of travelling to the Moon, while this was just cold. I'd also like to know where they got the clips they used as the quality of the ones didn't seem to be that good. Of course, that might have been due to the fact that the print I saw was in rough shape, but the ones in For All Mankind were taken from the original masters that are stored in liquid nitrogen. And where the heck was Armstrong? The man's done some 3K presentations since he left NASA (he even did ads for Chrysler), so it's not like he won't come out of his cave.

Even though I looked for Collins in Mission Control, I couldn't spot him, so it's possible that the woo-woos will miss him as well. However, some of the shots looked CGI'd to me. There were a couple when they were flying over the surface that seemed to have been CGI'd, and the top-down view of one of the astronauts descending the ladder just seemed to be CGI'd. Again, this could have been an artifact of the print I saw, or it's possible that they could have cleaned up the original footage with CGI and that's what's responsible for it. One of the seperation shots, I could swear appears in Apollo 13 and was done in CGI since they didn't have film footage of it.

Hopefully The Wonder of it All will be a better film.

Is that why I never see my deep-sea exploration guys or Zahi Hawass in the mainstream news? It seems too boring? And I just thought some people think "exploration" is a swear word.

It seems boring because they don't have the right people in charge of dealing with the media. Let's face it, they had little room in the Apollo capsules to do much of anything, and they couldn't carry a lot, so about the only thing they could think of to do was show people stuff floating around. If we had a decent educational system in this country, then people would watch the stuff and realize that Buzz simply being the first man to take a whizz on the Moon was the result of an engineering "miracle" and not something as easy as going for a walk.

What NASA needs to do is get Lucas and/or Spielberg (preferrably Lucas, since that'd keep him too busy to muck up the Star Wars universe worse than he already has) and put him in charge of the media stuff. Then it'd be all sexy and exciting for the cameras and maybe people wouldn't complain so much when NASA talked about going to the Moon or Mars.

Well, I guess I shouldn't complain... if not for Zahi Hawass, Egyptology would never get in the news at all. He's got that media charge.
Space needs a guy like that.

Yeah, back when Art Bell was on the air, Zahi would happily go on Art's show to talk about whatever and when Art went to Egypt Zahi gave him an all access pass. Getting the NASA guys to do things like that would be a big help.

It's like the folks who want to try to force creationism to be taught in the classroom, they succeed (at least in the short term) because the scientist types don't think they should dignify them with a response.

For real? I thought he was more agressive about people like that and even cancelled their visas. Maybe then, I would have listened to C2C.
