I particuarly like TV shows where the heroes travel around a bit and when they arrive in a place, they'll be a smart person who'll give a little bit of info about the place. That's how I got away with watching Scooby-Doo and the Legend of the Vampire and calling it reasearch for a trip to Oz that I was taking.

Six days here and I've already made a friend. :-) The world's a swell place.
My mom didn't think it was research, though.

Hmmm...sounds more like Bollywood than Hollywood. I did like Lagaan and Monsoon Wedding however.
But concerning the overall quality of movies, the trend seems to be toward more cartoonish CGI, mindless action, recycled plots, and content (what there is of it) aimed at very specific, quite limited demographics. Plus sex, violence, car chases, and explosions are added as if per a chemical formula. Which is why today's "mark your calendar because this movie opens on October 32nd and it will be the most significant experience of your life" movies are found a few months later in the $5 DVD bins. One can only hope such movies are having little to no impact on the arts and society in general. What they have to do with technology and social issues I don't know. They certainly don't get science, including astronomy, right.

And I know that you can't trust Wikipedia, but according to their Scooby-Doo article, Sagan liked it.

Wouldn't surprise me, since the Scooby-Doo Sagan would've seen would've been the original series, before it sold out and had actual, non-faked paranormal stuff in it.

Thanks for the reply, as i have already seen the old theatres before 30 years, and now looking the multiplexes, where i found a crowd of hi profile people who like great sound, (dolby,7track, etc), they just want good print quality on the screen,(movie is not a matter for them), they just come and see the different techniques like man flying, fighting in a slow motion with a hitech machines, big ships, big planes, big helicopters, etc. even the concept is changing more faster in the theatre to show the movie, they just hire the movie direct from sattelight and they show it on a large screen instead of making the show on that old big tape rings of movies on the projectors. They can edit conclude something like boar ads on the screen by giving computer camands.
What would be the movie shows in the year 2050 ? It is beyond our imagination, I think the nanotechnology can give the answer of it. (in one smallest cheap there will be a full movie of 3 hours), no need to handle the large tapes, just insert in one camera and get a larger picture on the screen, do you think that large telescopes can show better movie on large screens ! |

Just a guess, but maybe there won't be as many "movies" as we know them made then, but people will watch (and interact with!) stories in virtual worlds
that come into their head on a string of optical fiber. Maybe by that time computers will be fast enough to render worlds nearly indistinguishable from the real one, including smells, good tasting food and things I can't write about here.

Well, they said TV would kill the movie theater, they said VCR's would (they wounded it, but it still lives), and ditto for streaming video. I think 50 years probably isn't enough time for VR to do it.

Movie theaters have a bigger picture and better sound than most people can afford to have at home. When this isn't the case, and your VR deck streams input into your head that makes IMAX look like Hi8, why go out to the movies? Sure, there will always be some people who will want to do it the old way, like people who listen to vinyl records instead of CDs or off of a hard drive, but the latter have all but replaced the former.
