Default Fun with "The History Channel"

Despite my previous disavowals, I'm always tempted to tune in to see what the latest mess is these folks have come up with.

I won't go into the disaster called "Hangers" on "Modern Marvels" where they described a Saturn launch while rolling the film of some other, much smaller rocket with huge fins and a couple of strap-on solid boosters.

However, since I spent a lot of time in and around Lake Champlain, I thought I'd check out the entire hour segment of "MonsterQuest" having to do with "Champ", the resident lake monster.

But, I lost it when the narrator described Lake Champlain as being "bordered on the east by New York and on the west by Vermont." Sorry, they got it completely bass ackwards.

Funny stuff.

Should this be actually "The Comedy Channel for Persons with IQs over 80"?

PS: Is it really necessary that every scene/shot change in a cryptozoological (and others of their ilk) presentation be accompanied by a BOOM/CRASH in the audio track?

I tried watching "The Universe" lastnight about how astronomical events can kill us (Shades of Phil's second book - Death From the Skies?) But I was falling asleep. Does anyone know if it is available on the web, outside the US (Thinking back to my problems trying to watch an episode of NOVA)

Eh? I can't imagine what rocket that could be. How much smaller?

Did it look like something these? These are Little Joes which were part of the Mercury and Apollo programs.

Little Joe was definitely not a Saturn but was part of Apollo. Maybe a (very) broad stretch to connect the image and the narration?

History Channel can be hit or miss. Lately it's been showing a lot of UFO gorp, I suspect because of the Thanksgiving Holidays and a perceived public need for TV junk food.

I thought of Little Joe, but it lacks the strap-on boosters.

I'm not sure I know how many of you are serious or taking in tongue-in-cheek. But; I am going to take solace in knowing the scene that Mak is referencing (maybe a different one, but I do remember seeing that happen)

Anyway, what about THC talking about the dangers of heating hydrogen (in reference to a Jupiter hot air balloon)? And, even showing the Hindendburg while saying it.

I doubt there are many hydrogen reactants in Jupiters atmosphere.

As a New Yorker, I also know that this is very wrong.
Are our states really so interchangeable to these heartless producer types?
BTW, I saw a great program on NGC about Loch Ness. They showed that a photo that was supposed to show Nessie was really just an overexposed image of a golden retreiver!

Can you describe this any more?

I can't think of or find any rockets like this - they either have boosters or big fins, but nothing of appreciable size has both that I can find. As others have said, my best guess off the top of my head would be a little joe, but it doesn't have strap ons.

Well, it went by rather quickly, but it looked somewhat like an early version of a Black Brant. The camera angle was from under the rocket so it was hard to pick up details. It definitely wasn't a Little Joe or Little Joe II. I didn't record the show, but will see if it's coming up later.

This show I recorded. Here's a link to an MP3 of that statement (51.2KB). You be the judge.

So it's not the same clip I saw...
They once talked about Apollo and showed a shuttle launch. I wish I had a reference.

There seems to be some sloppy editing going on over at THC HQ. I was watching Tactical to Practical and at one point they were talking about video games and Medal of Honor: Allied assault in particular. Going on about how good it was. The only problem is that they only showed one clip of MOH:AA. The rest were from MOH: Pacific Assault. So if someone goes and gets MOH:AA expecting to be able to fight at Pearl Harbor, they aren't going to get to. On the plus side, they will have a great game that will most likely work well on their machine, unlike MOH:PA which barely runs on mine.

Well I just wanted to toss that onto the fire.

The History Channel drinking game: Every time they screw something up, take a drink. Probably the person with the most knowledge gets drunk fastest.

Here's a good one for your contest.

It was called "Secrets of Soviet Space Disasters". Below are a few highlights.

Quote:
Narration: But no one but American intelligence and NASA know that the Soviets haven't given up. Three days earlier they've launched Luna 15, a secret, unmanned Moon probe in a standard rocket...NASA keeps the news from the public.
Actually Luna 15's flight was all over the TV, radio, and newspapers (even from the USSR) from July 13 to July 21, and it was well-publicized when it crashed into the Moon.

This is supposedly footage of Luna 15's crash. It's actually from a US-launched Ranger probe from earlier in the 1960s.

Quote:
Narration: Meanwhile a world away in New Mexico, America is having its own struggles with this modified V-2.
The Redstone is blowing up on a pad with an ocean in the background. Didn't know New Mexico had one of those. Looks a heck of lot like Cape Canaveral.

Quote:
Narration: (re the Nedelin/R-16 disaster) The fire burns for hours fed by millions of pounds of kerosene and liquid oxygen.
There was no kerosene or liquid oxygen aboard the R-16 ICBM that blew up. It carried UDMH and nitrogen tetroxide.

Quote:
Dr. Andrew Aldrin (son of Buzz): It was clear the administration wanted to push very hard for Soyuz 1, because it was going to be launched along with another Soyuz...And this was all going to happen on the 40th anniversary of the glorious October socialist revolution.
This launch was in 1967. The October revolution was in 1917. That's 50 years earlier, not 40.

Poor, improperly researched writing can entrap even the best folks.

And on it went.

Bomark matches the description. It had big fins and two strap-on boosters for launch assist.

Hey, that Bomarc might be it, even though the "strap-ons" are actually ramjets. The "B" had a strap-on solid booster which was jettisoned soon after take off. Based on the composition of the smoke trail your photo is probably of a "B".

Maybe it's not a coincidence that the initials of The History Channel are 'THC'.
