If you're talking about the BSG quote, it implies that their universe has cyclic time; which may help explain the "prophecies" and "vision" that allow them to see (or think they see) the future.

Ask Ron D. Moore. But even if he has figured out what it means, he won't tell you. You'll have to watch it play it out starting in.....*MARCH*!

More seriously, that's some tenet of colonial religion, and the cylons themselves are big on it. And, whoever are whatever is the agency behind Head Six, Head Baltar, and Not Really Leoben, not to mention who the Final Five really are, are all big on it.

As was said above, it seems to be that certain themes of history repeat themselves in an endless cycle. There is some reincarnation aspect of it. People (and cylons) are actors who play different roles each time around.

Ron D. has been doing that on the small scale all through the series. For example, Starbuck was the torturing interrogator and Leoben was the prisoner. Then later, Starbuck is Leoben's prisoner.

Roslin rebels against Adama. Then a bit later Adama is having to rebel against Caine. Baltar comes to see Roslin when she's being held prisoner during the occupation. Then Roslin comes to see Baltar when he's held being prisoner after they capture him. Etc, etc. All of this happened before and it will happen again.

And on the large scale as well as small. Apparently in the BSG universe, "human vs. cylon" has been going on time and time again, and our heroes and villians are just part of the current iteration. The previous time around, and the next time, human and cylon will shift roles a bit, as well as the heroes and villians. But the theme repeats.

to speculate....I've often wondered about things like deja vu....has it all happened before? I've had moments when I can almost tell you what's about to happen next....the most vivid experience of deja vu I've ever had was in high school....I think I may have even blurted something to the effect of, "hey wait a minute....I really hate re-runs"

It means that threads in Small Media at Large tend to cover the same topics over and over again.

Could it mean that somehow the Galactica'll end up finding Earth, but the Earth of the past?

Or will it simply be the requisite piece to start the cycle again?

If time is cyclic, then the entire universe, including humanity, will have been destroyed and recreated many times.

I guess I just don't think deeply enough. To me, it seemed a natural reference to reruns and sequels.

I'm not sure if Starbuck really is going to lead the human race to destruction. Aside from the fact that this piece of information came from a Cylon hybrid (how trustworthy is that?), he said Starbuck would lead the human race "to its end". Does that mean it's destruction, or does it mean something else? And could being the "herald of destruction" mean destruction of the Cylons?

I don't understand what you mean. Nothing that has happened recently in world events has given me nostalgia.

You know, the other debate around here, about what is the meaning of cycles and "the end", is the debate about the Mayan calendar and the end of the current long cycle on December 21, 2012. So, maybe that's when the BSG is going to find Earth! And the Mayans knew it all along!

It's reflecting very familiar historical patterns, though. The Greek city-states rejecting Athens' economic hegemony as having too much power, only to turn to the fanatical and militant Spartans for leadership; Rome, turning from the ancient world's most democratic republic to an empire of conquest and faith, all because of a fear of barbaric assaults against their civilization; a whole host of demagogues using public fear to cement their own power.

Nothing new under the sun.

If you haven't read it yet, read my little S4 rumor mill spoiler thread for a start, then go to all the sites about it where all this is discussed endlessly.

Oh, and this is not a cyclic time notion in the sense that everything repeats exactly like an endless tape loop. No, it's just like the "doomed to repeat history" notion. The same basic play is staged over and over again, with all the actors switching roles each time. One time you're the good guy, next time you're the bad guy. One time you're "human", next time you're "cylon". But each time around, it's still the same play, just staged and acted a bit differently each time.
