The book you're referring to is 'Beyond the Blue Event Horizon', the second in that series. Pohl's "Gateway" series is one of the good ones IMO. But then again, I like Ben Bova and the 'grand tour' series, so what do I know?

I would recommend Heinlein (Robert) as well, and the other authors are also excellent.
