Nobody wants to talk about a Spider shaped craft in scifi movies or space fictional books

Basically I'm talking about the design of the Lunar Landing Module for Apollo,
maybe a similar design existed with the USSR's Lunokhod lander or the Viking and recent Phoenix mission

Every writer and concept artist want something that flies like a StarTrek ship or Buck Rogers ship. Take off like an airplane, zoom up into the stars and fly down onto a planet like an aircraft and then take off again like an airplane

I can remember the last time I saw a real lander in science fiction
Is there something un-attractive or non-scifi about the LLM design?

It's designed for places with no air. If you're writing a story, you usually have characters, and that means the setting is usually someplace that those characters can go, and that means places with air.

Possibly this is due to the fact that it's science fiction, which generally means it takes place in the future, which generally means that technological advancements have been made.

Complaining that there's few Apollo Era-esque landers in SF is a lot like being an SF-reader in 1915 and complaining that all flying machines in fiction are now metal airplanes and whirlybirds, instead of balloons.

I've always liked those things in the Gerry Anderson thing, "Space 1999".

A bit "spider like" (framework and stuff visible.)

...not designed for places with atmosphere (but I was too young at the time to remember if they were "realistic" in terms of flying like planes etc.)

Me too. The did plenty wrong with them, but for a TV series, it was probably among the best. There wasn't a whole heck of a lot of "getting away with it" going on between it and 2001 which probably helped.

I like the 7th hit the best, It gives perspective. (It's a great site too)
