Spider-like spaceship in Sci-Fi. Sorry, couldn't resist

Possibly this is due to the fact that it's science fiction, which generally means it takes place in the future, which generally means that technological advancements have been made.
Complaining that there's few Apollo Era-esque landers in SF is a lot like being an SF-reader in 1915 and complaining that all flying machines in fiction are now metal airplanes and whirlybirds, instead of balloons.

I've always liked those things in the Gerry Anderson thing, "Space 1999".
A bit "spider like" (framework and stuff visible.) ...not designed for places with atmosphere (but I was too young at the time to remember if they were "realistic" in terms of flying like planes etc.) http://images.google.co.nz/images?hl...ace+1999&gbv=2 [Not that I'm saying anything else in that show was "realistic"...]
