Default The Big Bang Theory TV Comedy Show

Heya,

I was wondering if anyone here has seen The Big Bang Theory on CBS and what do you think about it. I looked for a previous thread and couldn't find one. I decided doing a search for big bang theory on this forum would be an exercise in futility.

I, personally, love the show. There are only two problems that I find. The first is an engineer who can't repair an elevator. The second is scientist/engineers that mention Archimedes and his lever but can't think to build a block-and-tackle to pull heavy objects up stairs.

How about you?

Dee

CBS. CBS (with big bang) was the key.

The Big Bang Theory on CBS

It helps to have authored the title, too. That topic never drew much action though, because the show was new.

I've known a lot of theoretical scientists who couldn't do engineering. And even more who couldn't be mechanics.

I don't follow closely, but the characters seemed to me to be more theoretical than practical.

The BA Blog had a recent entry: The Big Bang Theory, back on the air

Hi Dee...Greetings and welcome to BAUT!
yes, i fell for it, title-wise...last week.

i believe it's a new acquisition being transmitted in the UK; decided to check it out.

using the local lingo....it's rubbish. two minutes were more than enough. that's my opinion, okay!

What would you like to know about Big Bang?
Do you have specific questions / observations / comments to make?

Please feel, really free to express yourself. You might be surprised by the generous response!

The floor is all yours, go ahead!

I like Big Bang Theory. It reminds me of several of my friends.

I agree with 01101001 Engineering and Mechanical ability aren'tthe same thing as Theoretical Physics.
I have a friend who Lectures at Durham University, I wouldn't trust him to plug in a Kettle.

Another BA Blog article about the actors: A Big Bangin’ panel at Comic Con

===

From Wikipedia: List of characters from The Big Bang Theory it looks like the main characters Leonard and Sheldon do physics theory.

Wolowitz is a Mechanical Engineer so maybe he could design an elevator; but could he fix one? His work on a Mars rover might suggest yes.

Rajesh: particle astrophysics.

Cue the Theremin music. Now that was weird. That article was just minutes old when I found it.

I had recalled the Comic Con panel from months ago, from July. The above was my first hit in a search and I assumed it was what I recalled. It wasn't. This is:

I've enjoyed what I've seen of it so far, though the recent episodes I've seen weren't as good as the early ones.

The technical accuracy is amazing for any TV program, let alone a sitcom. The only time they've gotten silly about it is when one of the characters sneaks his girlfriend in to JPL (never identified as such) to drive one of the Mars rovers - ignoring all the security issues and the fact that you don't "drive" the Mars rovers, anyhow.

The ending was good, at least I thought so.

It's one of my favorite new shows on television. I'm very upset though because our DVR didn't record it last night. It was on the list of things to record, and nothing else was recording, but it didn't record it. Only think I can figure is we had it set to record only new episodes, and sometimes they guide apparently doesn't flag new episodes as new.

Now it's set to record all episodes; unfortunately it hasn't been around long enough to be in syndication, so I likely won't be able to catch yesterday's episode until after this season ends.

I couldn't find it on the show's website; they had clips, but not whole episodes.

Count me as a fan, especially when I'm cracking up over some technical joke and then I have to explain it to my wife. That doesn't happen very often with other television shows.

As for the elevator issue, consider a couple of things:
  • Yes, Wolowitz is some kind of engineer, but since he apparently works for NASA (somehow) his specialty probably doesn't include mundane mechanical engineering. A brain surgeon might save your life from a tumor, but could he diagnose your pneumonia?
  • Wolowitz doesn't live in that apartment, so it's not really his responsibility. Leonard and Sheldon live there, but they are theoretical physicists (As Leonard said recently, "At work I thought about stuff. . . . I wrote some of it down.") If Wolowitz were injured repairing the elevator, you can be sure the landlord wouldn't be responsible.
  • Perhaps Wolowitz did look at the elevator and identified the defective part, but the landlord won't pay for it, or the part is on backorder.
  • With a working elevator, the writers wouldn't have the easy method of two characters living in different apartments having a lengthy dialogue.

I agree that the concept of driving a car on Mars wouldn't work in reality, but as a pickup line it's golden. The show was fine until Wolowitz got the rover stuck in a ditch.

It's curious how the guys knock on Penny's door (knock-knock-knock "Penny?"knock-knock-knock "Penny?"knock-knock-knock "Penny?") but Penny just waltzes into Leonard's apartment as if she lives there. This is a common time-saving device on sitcoms, but it tweaks me to see a character open a door and immediately start talking--it's almost as if the person knew in advance that someone would be just on the other side of the door.

Sheldon's Shirts lists the vendors where you can purchase the cool T-shirts worn by the characters. It also has the full rules of rock-paper-scissors-lizard-Spock.

Yep, I'm a fan.

I don't find it curious. I find it a device to highlight Penny's social nature versus the reservedness of the "nerds". And of course she should expect someone to be on the other side; if the doors unlocked, the guys are in the living room. That's where they hang out.

Heya,

If you haven't seen the show there are some spoilers at the end of this reply.

When Sheldon was experiencing a self-esteem crisis over the Korean student he went to where Wolowitz was working. Wolowitz was designing and fabricating a stand for a satellite so I would hazard that he does some mechanical engineering. My favorite quote is from this particular episode.
Quote:
Engineering: where the noble semi-skilled laborers execute the vision of those who think and dream. Hello, Ooompa-Loompas of science.
In one episode Wolowitz says he can fix the elevator. He walks over and pushes the up button. When the light doesn't go off he walks back over to the guys and says, "Yep, that babies broken."

You're right. For Penny, the apartment is more like a college dorm (although I don't think she went to college). For the guys, it's more like the secured access areas requiring badge IDs.

As a doctor fan I would to Sheldon wear this one.

The Big Bang Theory's been on in Finland too for a while now. It's pretty funny in places, yet I can't help feeling it's a little too much of a mix of elements from Dharma & Greg (no big surprise) and Frasier.

My wife and I watch it together (with our local TIVO/Satellite thing) and we both laugh out loud often enough to make it worth watching.

It's pretty good in its' class (half hour sitcom).

I would like to add that this show is a family show for us. When its time for TBBT everything in the house stops and we gather around the TV. My kids love this show and get very upset if an episode that is missed. Of course, it helps that my youngest children all want to be scientist when they grow up.
This is one of the few times that we actually watch TV. The other cases being The Fringe, Supernatural and when my beloved watches Dexter (which I can't stand).

Show trivializes scientific dishonesty, according to this columnist:

Fake scientific data no big deal on TV’s “Big Bang Theory”

Quote:
Research can be frustrating, and researchers can act like real jerks when their experiments fail or don’t produce the expected results. But is this ever a reason to falsify data? The season premier of the popular CBS television show “The Big Bang Theory,” which aired Sept. 21, dealt with the ethics and consequences of faking results.
(SPOILER WARNING: the plot of the season opener is discussed in detail.)

The only thing I thought of is when seeing wolowitz with the moustache and cowboy hat was the song YMCA. But it is just a show trying to be funny and that is why I watch it.

Yikes! I didn't know scientists were so untrustworthy. This is going to open a can of worms in certain places on this board for sure.

But I think they're being too hard on TBBT. They faked the data not to publish fake data, but simply to handle Sheldon. They owned up when faced with the faked data being published. They weren't trying to fool the world and they conduct was deliberately aimed at preventing wider deception.

If you mean the current season, it's in it's third season.

The first episode was one of those "ease you back in to the cliffhanger like last season finale" shows, which always feel lacking to me. The second episode of the third season I thought was back to it's normal (high) caliber.

I actually felt the other way around - I really enjoyed the first episode but thought the second one was kind of lame, at least by the show's usual standards.
