Default Films to watch for in 2009

No, I'm not talking about the most anticipated films of next year. I'm talking about the movies most likely to generate traffic on these boards. Forewarned is forearmed, as they say.

1. 2012

Could there be a more BAUT-friendly title than that? And it's directed by Roland "Day After Tomorrow" Emmerich to boot. Expect this site's bandwidth to implode when this one comes out.

2. Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen

Ah Michael Bay. How we missed you. The last time you did a Transformers movie, you told the world that Mars's sky was blue and that it had mud flats. What will you do now?

3. Monsters Vs. Aliens

One of the characters is a fishman called the Missing Link. Expect creationists to claim that this proves that evolutionists can't figure out if man evolved from apes or fish. You know it will happen.

4. Year One

Harold Ramis has made some great movies (Groundhog Day, anyone?) but here he seems to be courting the creationist dollar with a movie about exiled cavemen who encounter scenes from the Book of Genesis. Could be a blast. Could be a disaster.

5. Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs

Title says it all, really.

6. Race to Witch Mountain

UFO conspiracy for kiddies.

7. Star Trek

As scifi franchises go, Star Trek has a pretty good track record with scientific accuracy (I said pretty good!) but how far off will the notoriously ponderous JJ Abrams veer in his so-called reinvention? Anyone watch Fringe? This could be bad.

8. Up

You just know that someone on this forum is going to point out that no, it isn't actually possible to fly a house using a thousand helium balloons and sails made of shower curtains. Nor is it possible to drag a flying house along behind you on a piece of string as you hike through the mountains of Venezuela. To say nothing of how the toilet is supposed to work.

9. Land of the Lost

If they stick to the TV show, which depicted this place as a parallel universe accessed via dimensional portals, then this could be OK. But if they actually start saying that this is a real place under the ground, expect some science debate.

10. Whiteout

A murder mystery set in Antarctica involving a "a secret buried for 60 years". Exactly how many secrets have people managed to bury there? Let alone 60 years ago. I gotta bad feeling about this...

BAUT aside, of those, the one I'm sure I will enjoy is Ice Age 3. I love that little saber-toothed squirrel critter.

Sigh, at that. The first one is pretty decent. The second one . . . has Bette Davis!

I see some people share my contempt for Michael '2-frames per edit' Bay. a.k.a. Michael 'scientific accu-what?' Bay.

Personally I want to see Avatar the most this year, methinks. Say what you will about James Cameron - the man knows his technology.

If I actually knew a jot about what Avatar was about, I might have included it on this list. I love James Cameron's movies. Always have. I think the guy's a technical genius who also cares about narrative. That said, I also think he's a complete jerk, as apparently does everyone else who's ever worked with and/or married him. But a lot of movie directors are complete jerks. Comes with the job.

I'm really looking forward to "Watchmen", based on the comic book by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons.

Swift, I think you took a wrong turn at Albuquerque. Perhaps you wanted this thread?

As for the Watchmen movie, perhaps we'll get to see it, perhaps not. There are some legal problems, apparently.

...
From the official movie website:

Quote:
Will Ferrell stars as has-been scientist Dr. Rick Marshall, sucked into a space-time vortex and spat back through time. Way back. Now, Marshall has no weapons, few skills and questionable smarts to survive in an alternate universe full of marauding dinosaurs and fantastic creatures from beyond our world--a place of spectacular sights and super-scaled comedy known as the Land of the Lost.

Sucked alongside him for the adventure are crack-smart research assistant Holly (Anna Friel) and a redneck survivalist (Danny McBride) named Will. Chased by T. rex and stalked by painfully slow reptiles known as Sleestaks, Marshall, Will and Holly must rely on their only ally--a primate called Chaka (Jorma Taccone)--to navigate out of the hybrid dimension. Escape from this routine expedition gone awry and they're heroes. Get stuck, and they'll be permanent refugees in the Land of the Lost.
As one who has fond memories of cheesy Saturday morning kid-vid, I was at first excited about seeing a big-screen remake of this. But having read descriptions of this movie, I fear it's going to be bad. And bad in a bad way, not in a good way.

Nick

I saw one of them on Disney Channel once (I'm not sure which.) and thought it was pretty good.

Sooo ... is it good that it has Bette Davis, or bad? Some people like her, some not so much.

I like Bette Davis. It's the movie I don't really like.

I'm waiting for the Sigmund the Sea Monster movie remake since Hollywood is apparantly doing remakes of Sid and Marty Krofft TV shows...and let's not forget HR Pufnstuff!

There's been a promising development...Apparently, both parties have requested an upcoming hearing be delayed because...settlement talks started last week and concessions have apparently been made on both sides. What this basically means is that WB will likely be paying Fox a whole heap of money to end the lawsuit once and for all and have the move released on time [March 6]...

As stupid as the 2012ers are, I'm really curious how he is going to destroy NY this time. Also I can't really fault Emmerich for the Guys who take it seriously, unlike the Histeria-Channel the movie doesn't claim to be a anything other than fiction.

Sorry to bump this so egregiously, but could someone please move this to Bad Astronomy in the Media?

They're doing neither. They're not remaking the TV show at all. They're just making fun of it. It stars Will Farrell as a scientist who goes completely bonkers in plain old Earth within the first few scenes (including a very public physical assault on Stephen Hawking), thus setting up the rest of it as simply his hilarious hallucinations and witty running commentary about how weird they are. And it stars Will Farrell.

I'm not sure about such a move. Bad Astronomy in the Media is more to discuss specific examples of BA, whereas Small Media at Large is more the general chat about media. This thread seems more chatting than bad astronomy.

But if you see other things that should be moved, the best way to report them is to click the red triangle in the upper right corner, to report the post or thread.
