Default Moon

Saw "Moon" in the theater recently. I thought it was pretty good. Not your typical SciFi flick. Complex story - with some gradually (or quickly) dawning-on-audience political overtones - especially don't blink and miss what is literally the very last line in the film, spoken by a voice-over radio commentator.

For a low budget flick it has good effects depicting the lunar surface but there are the usual errors. (I won't call these spoilers since listing them isn't giving away the plot.)

1. Gravity is lunar-like outside the moonbase but Earth-like inside. (An old film tradition going back to the great "2001- A Space Odyssey".)

2. Equipment running on the lunar surface (harvesting Helium3) is really pretty cool but makes noise. That's OK when the characters are inside the pressurized cabins but outside? It would be creepier to cut to dead silence or the sound of breathing from inside the spacesuit, again like 2001.

Anyone who likes anything dealing with the moon and intriguing creepy plots should see the film. Previews can be seen by placing "Moon" at www.imdb.com or putting "Moon movie" into www.google.com.

I've posted these links here before. But try putting "moon" in the baut search function and see what happens.

Not that it's of significance, but the film's creator Duncan Jones is the son of David Bowie.

Just read the IMDB info on the film. Someone has already noted a signfiicant "oops":

Quote:
(From IMDB) When Sam goes out to discover what might be blocking the signal from Earth, he looks up to see the Earth overhead. Just as the Earth cannot ever see the far side of the Moon, the Earth can never be seen from the far side of the Moon.
Still, it sounds better than the average sci fi flick and the Helium 3 aspect is intriguing.

Yeah I noted that too when I watched the movie.

I had just assumed that he had to drive far enough away from the base that he ended up on the 'near' side of the moon. (We know he's on the "far" side, but I don't think we know exactly where... )

I saw this the other day and I think it's good, actually very good, just in the first five minutes I was thinking somebody smart has put a lot of thought into this and I continued to be impressed.
Old school, hardcore, intelligent SF getting its thrills from ideas not explosions, there is a taste (deliberately I understand) of 2001, Silent Running, Dark Star and others in this.
Then it goes into brain melt mode, breaks your expectations and procedes to use a technique of storytelling utilised by some of the finest SF.. it uses the SF setting to place a person in a very novel and challenging situation, which enables the story to deeply explore that persons humanity, who they are and other deep stuff. In a very intimate and personal way, with some truly heartbreaking revelations.
I thought I was watching a decent intelligent SF movie, but it ended up as just that plus a lot more.
Definately recomended to fellow BAUTers, I think there are a lot of people here who would really like this.

The Moon has roughly the surface area of Africa. Even at the edge of the far side, he'd have to go hundreds of miles to see more than a sliver of Earth barely peeking over the horizon; from the description "looking up" it doesn't sound like that's what he saw.
