Default Stargate: Universe- anyone else watch it? (SPOILERS)

it premiered last night, and it was alright. but there were just a few too many little coincidences that led to dialing the "9th Chevron" for my tastes. but i'm sure they will all be explained away in half a season that it's actually on the air.....

If I get bored enough this week, I might watch it on the website.

I liked it alright. The characters I'm supposed to like, I liked. Hated the ones I was supposed to hate. I'll watch again.

I watched it, but it was pretty dull for me. We know that most of them will survive (otherwise there will be no show), so that limited the tension considerably.

Hopefully it will get more interesting after they get past the introductory bits.

I enjoyed it. Liked the characters and the tensions between them. The biggest thing I can see being a "problem" among fans is the likely different atmosphere that SG-U will have vs SG-1, i.e. how SG-1 would poke fun at itself and other science fiction. I actually haven't finished watching all of the SG-A episodes, but I think Universe and Atlantis have more in common with each other.

Yes, we know that the major characters will make it for a while. I don't think that makes it any less exciting though. It'd be hard to do a Firefly:Serenity, kill them off every few episodes, begin developing new characters, etc. and keep most of the audience.

I love the explanation of why the Destiny is out there without anyone on board. Won't spoil it...

i'll watch it, too, and have a theory about why everything went down the way it did- the people that were there, the attack that led to the dialing of the 9 digit address... conspiracies are afoot, which i guess builds drama and gives them story lines to milk out over a few seasons (if it makes it that long).
i hope i'm not right- because that would just be lazy writing on their part.

Can we speculate or put spoilers in this thread?

I did like it but saw did see some coincidences that weren't too bad. After all, a story has to have enough coincidences to keep the action moving. I was wondering if the flying camera balls were a homage to Babylon 5 which used something similar. But I think the storyline reminds me a bit of the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica with its grittiness and a few other things.

Does the title include the word "Spoilers"?
No? OK, make another thread, same title but add "spoilers" and post them there.

No, but "anybody see it" seems to suggest a discussion of it as opposed to a mere poll asking if anybody has, in fact, seen it.

I felt "ripped-off". I thought that Lou Diamond Phillips would be the "star" of the show, and he isn't even on the ship.

...not too "fond" of the Dr. (Smith) character either and appearently he is the star of the show...

I'll give it a few weeks, but I wasn't partucularly impressed with the premier episode.

let's see what's in this "new" show....

a lot of Voyager....ie. the "Lost in Space" concept.....
Wesley Crusher....the annoying kid character
BSG.....camera work and grittiness and "I'll shoot you in the face...."
creepiness of "Aliens"....

nothing new
nothing original

this asteroid has been mined out

i have a feeling that Lou Diamond Phillips will be "seen" on the ship- they do have those magical communication stones that the doctor smuggled thru the gate. one of them is connected to the weird scientist guy from SG1 that used to be on the X Files, but he brought along a few of them, so maybe one of them is hooked up to LDP.

Well, that's pretty much true of all SF shows, the difference is what they do with them. What I did think was good was the Senator doing what he did, unlike in BSG.

We aren't supposed to like him. I thought the ship looked pretty cool. I'm ready to see them explore it.

It was OK, but they've obviously tried to ape BSG, only without the tension of the Cylons. Carlyle is an accomplished actor who has had some fairly ingeniously messed up roles, but here seems to be taking an easy paycheck by simply channelling James Callis, an actor who had barely a role to his name before he signed onto BSG. Seems a bit of a waste.

I liked it, I just hope it doesn't turn into Stargate: Voyager.

Well, you had the three prong look that so many craft have had-wide back section, longer central section.

The Destiny looks a bit like the Pilgrim knife amulet from the WING COMMANDER movie crossed with the Draconia from Gil Gerard's Buck Rogers http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gil_Gerard

I really like the Destiny, esp that long engine section in the back. As a youth, I remember a curvy black plastic coat-hanger with a lower section (bar) Seen top on, the shoulder of the hanger looked like the manta machines from War of the Worlds, and the bar connecting the tips looked to me to be a great side to side impulse engine. Glad to see that looked finally fleshed out in CGI.

I thought the rear engines of the Destiny reminded me of the Millenium Falcon.

Ey you stole my line! Well I was going to write that this will be Stargate Voyager. I have a strong feeling it is about how they are going to get home for the next 25 seasons.

Not overly bad, will watcht the 3rd episode on the PC tonight, after or before Sanctuary, I am not sure yet.

The only way this could turn into Stargate Voyager is if they somehow managed to miraculously restore the ship to perfect working order and then continued to do so between every subsequent episode.

and if the ship and the entire crew gets destroyed every other week, only to have the leader go back in time and push a big reset button of some sort.
one thing that just dawned on me today is this: if the Ancients sent out all those ships to seed the universe with Stargates long before they learned to ascend, then how come it was never mentioned in any of the Ancient databases on Atlantis or elsewhere in the galaxy? i'm sure there will be some sort of an explanation eventually if the series doesn't get canceled, but i wanna know now.
and maybe we will finally meet the Furlings in some far away galaxy..

The pilot makes clear that the 9-chevron address was found in a database on Atlantis.

Hooo boy I'm a geek.

Wouldn't it be weird if the Furlings turned out to be the food the crew were scavenging?

A bigger question for me is, if they had ships that could build Stargates and drop them onto planets, then shouldn't those ships have also built repair depots in case the ship got damaged?

maybe the self repair subroutines in the computer database crystal thingies got destroyed, or maybe the systems on the ship for self repair were taken out in the attack that damaged the ships.

as for the 9 Chevron address deal- i might have missed some dialog, but i got the impression that they just accidentally stumbled across a stargate that had 9 dialing digits on it, so they made a video game to sell to the public to try to find out which digit went where instead of having Sam and McKay magically figure it out in 5 minutes while General O'Neill stands there and pretends to be annoyed with all the techno babble....

Before we start talking about things that happened in the pilot, have we established whether or not this thread is supposed to have spoilers?

Well, in the first three episodes, there's only been one event so far that could be called a "spoiler", and it's debatable whether or not it's all that relevant anyway.

I went in sceptical but was quite impressed. I did like geek boy because of intrinsic empathy. I did at least like that he was a graduate of MIT rather than just being some naturally gifted wunderkid.

I don't remember hearing the word "graduate" in that discussion. My impression of the character is that he's supposed to be the "brilliant drop-out" type.

Turns out you are correct...

Perhaps they'll have some sort of "stone accident" (groovy man...) to get him on the ship permanently...if not, then I still feel "ripped-off".

In the latest show, the interaction between the soldier who was released from the brig, and the Dr. character reminded me of a dark version of the interaction between Don and Dr. Smith from Lost in Space. I wonder if that was intentional.

spoil away.. so far, the show has pretty much only been a couple of episodes of BSG mixed with LOST and Stargate:Atlantis. not really much to give away.
