Some writers aren't so convinced the essential humanity would remain...
The Finnish mundane/hard science (well mostly, there's one short that's a bit iffy) short story collection Nimbus for example flatly states that "man set out too early" and thus became so culturally divergent as to be essentially multiple species.
Alistair Reynolds alludes to the similar possibility in Galactic North as well, tho in House of Suns even the radically different humans can understand each other rather well, as long as they aren't fully transhuman of course.
In itself, the concept is interesting but it might be difficult to do so it's palatable to the audiences. OTOH Lost for example is fairly popular despite the at-times complex episode structures (not to mention the labyrinthine story arc, if indeed there is any "arc") so I suppose it could work if the writers kept a tight lease on the telling.
