Smile Music lyrics publishers?

I've written a song (lyrics) -- at least I think I have -- and I'm wondering if anyone here has info as to publishers/buyers. Yes I have checked Google and I'm lost in a myriad of seemingly no true info; just stuff about lyrics (how to write and etc.).

Sorry, no; I obviously won't share the lyrics here.

But I'd be appreciative of any solid info. I do have contacts for prose writing, but not for song lyrics.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

http://www.ascap.com/index.aspx

this is the place that collects royalties for artists when their music gets used by others- radio stations, wedding dances, bands doing cover tunes, etc.,

Lyrics but no music? How do you know it is a song in that case? Can you
tell that music for it is going to turn up?

I can't write music, though I hope to partner up with someone who can. I have "the sound" of the song in mind; need someone to write that out for me.

Just watch for song sharks. The easy way to tell them is they ask for money. A legit publisher pays you, not the other way around. (ok, if it's a vanity publisher, and that's what you want, ok, but some take your money and promise the moon while giving you practically nothing).

There is a book, available at Borders or Amazon or whatever, called the "songwriters market" that lists them. It's thick, a few thousand pages.

Very true. They'll pay me.

That didn't occur to me. I'll check to see if there's a copy at the local Barnes & Noble. I've got a regular writer's market book, but that's strictly for magazines, short stories and publishing houses (novels).

It is extremely unlikely that a song publisher will be interested in song lyrics by themelves ... by definition whatyou have is not a song ... and there are far too many songwriters out there looking for publication for them to expend too much time and effort trying to put together promising lyricists who can't write music with promising composers who can't write lyrics when others are offering end product.

You are probably better trying to contact someone (an agent or manager) who might be able to put you in touch with some local composers who can help you. I fear going straight for the publisher might prove head-bangingly frustrating until you have actual songs to sell.

I agree with Mr Gorsky. But I have great doubts about how you will find a
composer who will be compatible with your views. A dating service, maybe?

When a producer gives a script to a prospective actor to read, there must
be an agreement between them that the actor will not reveal anything of
the script to anyone not authorized. Buttercup needs something similar.
How does she get it?

She makes it - useing plain english. Something along the lines of a "confidentiality agreement". There are a few technical consideratons, one regarding "consideration" to make it enforceable - but - in my view it is simply not practicable to draft such a doc everytime you wanna co-create with another. But thats me.

You gotta be carefull and CYA, but, it is creative art, and there needs to be a certain feeling you get from the other. It's not always wise to run to the atty's for every little issue. That's not creative. But she will have to make those decisions.

You get publishers looking for either or both. In ALL cases, there are far more submissions than acceptances, but still music, lyrics, and music with lyrics are accepted.

The short answer is: copyright it and only deal with reputable companies. Then bad things could still happen but: 1. it's far less likely, and 2. if you find out, you now have legal recourse.
