Default BBC Horizon: black holes

an hour long program, and they didn't even mention Hawking Radiation.

I'm all for the bbc licence fee, but after watching all that, I wonder....

The last time I watched Horizon, the entire script was probably half a page of content-free waffle. The rest of the time was filled with portentous music and "dramatic" images. It's rubbish nowadays. I'm sure it was better when I was young (oh no, I'm turning into a grumpy old man!)

Happened to catch the last 10 minutes or so of it. Seemed to focus too much on the "Singularity", even to the point of saying the singularity in BH and BB are exactly the same (unless I misheard). Interesting bit at the end on attempts to get the resolution to 'see' the outline (I suppose they mean event horizon) of Sgr A* SMBH. (By Shep Doeleman, wikipedia references this paper in the Sgr A* article. Haven't read it.)

the BBC only make programs like this to fulfil it obligations to provide educational programs.

Quote:
A number of important changes were made in the latest Charter to the Corporation's management and purpose:

-Promoting education and learning;

-The BBC must display at least one of the following characteristics in all content: high quality, originality, innovation, to be challenging and to be engaging.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BBC_Charter

I don't think that they are achieving this with what I saw.

I might make a complaint, but I suppose that that would just be a waste of time.

That's certainly been my experience on the two occassions I've complained to the BBC.

I too regret the terrible video effects the
producers foisted on us, faces in shadow,
lots of water moving in desperate attempts to
have pictures of concepts, rissolification
where one filmed interview is cut up and
spread throughout the show.

But it was worth hanging in there for the
spectacular work of imaging in infra-red and
micro-waves the stars orbiting something at
the galactic centre. After decades this
brought the black hole idea to absolute
reality. Not that I like it!

How much did the guy get?

And no mention of spaghettification

NB my spell check for spaghettification gave Self-justification as the first alternative

I recorded it and may have to watch it again as I was doing an emergency sewing job while it was on.

Horizon used to be a good series, the most influential one made was in the 1970's when microprocessors were being developed. the episode was called "Now the Chips are down"

You guys have it good.

Here, across the pond, we've got the Science Channel. Sounds good, doesn't it? Nah. It's engineering shows with pinheads for hosts. What little science they do have on the channel is fuller of fluff than a down pillow.

If that's not insult enough, it's half commercials--hocking everything from scam medication to law firms that just want to help you get the money you deserve.

someone with some video making experience should make a spoof documentary about the BBC, containing vague, sometime inaccurate, information. Interviewing people with strange lighting effect, interspersed with timelap cloud movement.

You could write the script on the back of a PizzaHut menu; for authenticity.

I'll say another thing, the last ten minutes
was like the Horizons of old. Sharp
photography showing locations at MIT and
the ongoing work attempting to see the
gravity lens ring using long baseline
interferometry with radio dishes across
the US. Sets up a return show sometime.

So this years Astronomy and Physics Horizon
a pass.

Interesting, since that's about all I saw, and I couldn't really understand the more critical posts by others. Guess the earlier part of the program was worse.
