Default How many gallons of gasoline in a barrel of oil?

Hey all,

So... how many gallons of gasoline can you make with a barrel of oil? (Ignoring gasoline used by things like trucking the oil to the refiniery, etc.)

Matherly. A barrel of US crude is ~ 42 gallons. Refined oil has a lower density, hence a higher volume, assuming no losses along the way. So it yields ~44 gallons of refinery products, not all of which are gasoline. World economy is getting real nervous regards political machinations in the Mideast. There's plenty of oil in Canada's tar sands, and at ~ 4-4:50 a barrel, shale reserves come into play in the US. You can of course make it from any organic matter with sufficient chemistry and engineering.

According to this link, one 42 gallon barrel of crude oil makes:
  • 19.5 gallons of gasoline
  • 4 gallons of fuel oil
  • 11 gallons of other products
I am not sure about the accuracy of the above. I seem to recall statements (because of catalytic cracking) about how we get more volume of products out of one barrel of oil than the volume of the original barrel.

According to that link, it actually goes like this:
  • 19.5 gallons of gasoline
  • 9 gallons of fuel oil
  • 4 gallons of jet fuel
  • 11 gallons of other products

Which is is 43.5 gallons total

My guess is the cracking process is somewhat adjustable, depending on demand for the various products ie diesel fuel sells for more than regular gasoline in Florida. Some gases such as methane and steam are likely. The methane is likely burned at the refinery as an energy source. Neil

All this is true in the US, which has rather smaller gallons than the "imperial measure" used in some other parts of the world. A barrel of oil/petroleum products amounts to just 35 imperial gallons.
