Crosseagle,
First, welcome to BAUT. Second, I suspect you are referring to an e-mail that states that Mars will look as big as the moon. The e-mail was incorrect when it first made the rounds back in 2003 and it is very wrong now. You can read more about it here.

You can always google that news station and find their website.
Then try to find that story. But as above, there is nothing going on that is going to have a moon and a planet as bright as the moon in the sky. As of right now, You can look at the moon tonight and see Venus. And most nights and mornings you can see Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and, depending on where you live(Smog and city lights) even Uranus ( no snickering, please). They are not big and bright like the moon. But all the same- you can see other planets with the naked eye pretty regularly. |

The only other thing I can think of is that there is lunar eclipse this month on the 28th - more details here, but it wouldn't look like two moons.

its suppose to be an event that happens every 2000 some odd years and looks like two moons=does anyone know what event happens in this time period or mabe l should ask whats his name jack hornaker or what ever his name is that comes on TV and says keep looking up
|
|

Well, what station were you watching? "TV" is an increasingly large location these days. What day, what time, what program? And what's your location?
Nothing with a 2000-year cycle comes to mind. Fred

Like I already said crosseagle, what you literally describe is not possible and is not happening this month. It is possible it is exactly what you heard on TV, we don't doubt you, but TV gets things wrong too. I mentioned my idea - the Mars e-mail. I recently got an e-mail newsletter that repeated this incorrect information, so it is possible a TV station picked it up. Crosseagle - did you read the link (to the BA's blog) that I had in my first post? Does that sound like what you heard?

Like Swift, the first thing that I suspected was another retelling of the nonsense about Mars, which is a story that has going around for a few years now. We're asking questions because we would like to determine if what you heard was that incorrect Mars story, but the bottom line is: No double moon.

I'm certain he would tell you what others here are trying to get across: what you heard is a false misreading of an event, originally described when it happened, 4 years ago, 2003: the closest approach of Mars to Earth in a long, long time. Mars didn't then look as big as the moon, and it won't this 4 years later, either, or ever. It's always too far away.

Two full moons in a month is called a blue moon. However it happens a lot more often than every 2000 years. The average time between full moons is 29.53 days. The average month length is 365.25/12=30.44 days. So the full moon moves on average 0.91 days earlier each month. That means it happens twice in a month on average every 30/0.91 month or 33 months, or every 2.7 years or so.

If the media would have reported this hoax email, I would want to find that article and nasty-gram them. I searched for media outlets in a search for two moons and Florida. The only mainstream I found was Orlando Sentinel, which might be related to a TV station (most are). But, the story explains it as a hoax. Quote:

Oh; and an afterthough (I would have added an edit, but 01101001 posted)
It's possible the TV station reported "Coming up...Two moons in the sky" (of course in many more words) as a lead in to the story that debunks the email.

The San Jose Mercury today had an article about tonight's eclipse, and a sidebar was the Mars-looks-as-big-as-the-Moon email:
E-mail can't make good on 2-moon show MARS WON'T APPEAR LARGER THAN LIFE. Hooray for journalists who try to get it right.
