Default Why Helical Shape for Radio or Microwave Recievers?

Ive seen these recievers like SETI or whatever uses that are Helical in Design like a Spring. Why do they use that design and is that Microwaves or Radio Frequency? Anyone?

Because it works.

If it is for SETI, it is micro wave, or millimeter waves, but helical antenna elements are used occasionally at both higher and lower frequencies. Neil

Great, thanks for the links. Im trying to see if the helical shape is somehow related to DNAs shape and there are similiarities, including a right handed or left handed orientation.

I think the only relation to DNA is the helix shape Unless you are getting the game on cellular reception

DNA is helical because if you have a moderately rigid polymer, then it's going to be straight or it's going to twist (and a helix is more compact).

The significant thing about DNA is that it is double, and has complementary components. This enables it to hold a sequence, and for that sequence to be replicated.

Helical antennas allow for radio signals of different polarization to be received. At low frequencies, polarization isn't all that important but it becomes significant as the frequencies increase. Microwave signals are sometimes refered to as horizontally polarized, vertically polarized, or circular polarized.

Here are some links about polarization and helical antennas:

Which I find to be a rather neat trick!

If we halt the ISS, all versions of Ares, and transport Orion and Altair aboard DIRECTv3's Jupiter family of Shuttle-Derived Launch Vehicles, we just might make it back to the Moon by 2020.
