Question this may be a silly question but...

If all the planets align wouldn't the gravitational field of the larger planets 'pull' in the the smaller planets close to them into their gravitational field resulting in the planets colliding with one another? therfore allowing us to say, when the planets align, some planets would exist no longer? Due to this fact, our solar system, will be new one pertaining to its components??????

I was researching a link between "Revalation" from the bible and the Mayan prediction of the new beginning of the world on 21st december 2012...and my contemplations of this question lurked in my head soon after..

Can anyone answer this question????????????
This may not b ea significent question to everyone here but I am a bit young and I want to learn all I can about space, especially find answers to my questions.

Thanks a Million,
Rekisha.

No, not at all. That's not how it works, has worked, will work. If that scenario were actual, there'd be just one planet -- after the hundreds of thousands of times the planets have come into similar rough alignment over the course of the solar system's long history.

The answer is no.

Consider the Great Amount of Distance between the planets.
Also how quickly the planets move.

As soon as the are aligned, they are out of alignment` again a moment later.

At the distances involved there is nowhere near enough gravitational pull or time to pull the planets into eachother.

If that was the case, the planets gravitational influence would act on eachother during any passing.

Right so far. In fact Jupiter alone changes the orbits of the other planets a little bit with its pull. The Earth aligns with Jupiter every 13 years or so. It aligns with all of Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn every (roughly) century and a half. This pull is the majority of why the the planets' perihelia move.

No, this part is wrong. These alignments happen very frequently, and no such collision has occurred, or even come close to occurring in billions of years.

Hello Rekisha, welcome to BAUT!

There are a number of threads here about 2012, mostly in ATM.

The other planets (especially the Jovians) are constantly pulling at the Earth according to their mass and distance. This does indeed affect the Earth's (and other planets) orbit in an extremely small way. An alignment would increase this pull slightly. Fortunately, even the combined pull of an alignment will not exert enough pull to change the orbits noticeably exept over millions of years. Neptune and Uranus can occasionally approach each other closely enough to affect each others orbits. This would be the only chance for planetary collision and there is no chance that this will happen anytime soon.

Rekisha,
No question is silly!
As long as you ask it in good faith (not intending to make trouble) and I think you do.

Planetary 'conjunctions' happen all the time. They have far more importance for astrologers than astronomers!
See the Wikipedia entry for conjunction: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conjunc..._and_astrology)
And the NASA page that is linked to from there, that shows how rthe planets lined up on this last Christmas Day, 2007! http://space.jpl.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/ws...ov=100&porbs=1
No religious significance or untoward physical effects at all, despite Mars and Earth on one side of the Sun, and Mercury, Jupiter and the Galatcic Centre on the other, all in a line.

John
PS Wow! You see how much help you get here, Rekisha! I read your post, I compose the answer taking a few minutes to find some links - 01101110 must have flying fingers! - and four other people have got in first!

Good answers all. I would further advise, Rekisha, that you do not look to the bible (nor any alleged Mayan 2012 predictions) for answers to scientific questions - nor to science to confirm what you read in the bible.
Good luck
ps - it's Revelations

No, it's Revelation. Singular, as in The Book of Revelation, or The Revelation to John.

Yeah, true, but I was only correcting the spelling. I don't care for the book, myself. I thought Harry Potter made the magic much more believable.
