Default Number of galaxies and stars in the Universe

What are the latest estimates of the number of stars and galaxies in the visible Universe? Also, more specifically, we have a pretty good idea that most of the stars are less massive than the Sun, but what about for galaxies? Is there any data on what type of galaxy is the most common universally? And, as with all questions such as this, how are these estimates arrived at?
