I am going to be very carefull how I word this question, in the interest of avoiding the apearence of a conspiricy question. I wish to pose it as a question to observers in the southern skies on the merrit of scientific observation only.
So, have any of you in the southern hemisphere observed what could be a newly discovered comet, aproaching from the south west direction (sorry, I don't have specific coordinates or a general distance) at any point in the last few months? It would be roughly 20-25 miles in diameter and possibly changing velocity from time to time. Anyone noticed anything like this? I have not seen anything about it in the forum or in recent astronomy publications so I am doubtful of the validity, just the same, I guess the best way to find out is to simply ask those who are avid observers.

I haven´t seen it myself, nor am I aware of anything in this sense coming from observatories down here.

Well, Heavens-Above has a list of the comets currently brighter than magnitude 12 and it's not a long list:

22P Kopff

C/2008 T2 Cardinal

C/2009 F6 Yi-SWAN

C/2007 Q3 Siding Spring
P/2009 F7 LINEAR

P/2003 H4 LINEAR

C/2009 G1 STEREO

22P Kopff is the brightest of this bunch at magnitude 8.1 ...and so probably not visible to most naked eyes. The dimmest on the list is 11.8 mag.

There's always a chance that a new comet has popped up so more details would be helpful.

Can we ask why you're asking?

Is it something you've seen? Something someone has reported to you? Something else?

This comes from a source I would consider to be, at very best, hillariously laughable. But on the outside chance that the source took a tiny grain of truth and twisted it impossibly, I thought I'd try to get to the bottom of the matter. Regretably I have no other information that what I posted, my apologies, I realize it is it is miniscule and not much to go on.

Mainly out of bordum....this was posted in a conspiricy forum and sometimes I have great fun shredding these things (probably a bit sadistic). I posted it in the question section because rather than pose a conspiricy theory, I decided to get to the bottom of it by the easiest method possible, simply asking people who have a passion for observing such things. I figured if anyone out there knew about this thing for real, it would probably be in here.

In case of doubt, consult the site "heavens Above" [heavens-above.com]. If it´s not there, there´s a good chance it does not exist. Furthermore, the people at BAUT would hardly miss it.

My suggestion would be to ask the poster what location in the world THEY are seeing this comet from, then check HA for the listing.

How far away is it? How would the diameter be determined without knowing the distance?

Assuming this means not from the normal means of Gravitational effects of the Sun and Planets and such, then this would mean it's not a comet but a spaceship.

So I'm quite willing to bet: bogus.

While coments do change velocity, as does any free-falling body with an elliptical orbit, they don't change velocity "from time to time," which seems to imply motion atypical of elliptical orbits.

I have seen enough here already to dismiss the account that was regailed to me, resulting in my post here. I also passed the information on to another who posted the proposal elsewhere in another forum, they were covinced enough by the information I had already gained by asking the question here.
