Default Opportunity at Endurance

Map of what it's been up to (captured from the Quicktime video of the flight director's report, so it's not particularly clear).

NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity Inspects Stone Ejected From Crater

Quote:
NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity has begun sampling rocks blasted out from a stadium-sized impact crater the rover is circling, and the very first one may extend our understanding about the region's wet past.

OK. I'm ready for a stereo panorama from this (very dark) vantage point.

It is steep, not like the gentle 18-degrees down from its first look in.

Be careful, Opportunity!

Yes, I'm just waiting for some Flight Director's report:

Quote:
"Hello, I'm Chris Lewicki with the Flight Director's report for June 12, 2004. Standing next to me is Navigation Engineer Jamie Smithers. Jamie made a little boo-boo today. Jamie, why don't you tell the nice taxpayers what you did today?"
(Head down.) "Mumble-mumble-mumble"
"Speak up, Jamie!"
(Head still down, barely audible.) "I sent Opportunity too close to the edge."
"Louder - they can't hear you."
"I SENT OPPORTUNITY TOO CLOSE TO THE EDGE!"
"And then what happened?"
"It went over the edge and into the crater."
"That's right, and now what are we going to do?"
"Nothing."
"And why is that?"
"Because we can't talk to the rover any more."
"That's right. Opportunity is now on its side or upside-down in Endurance Crater. So much for Meridiani. Have a good life, Jamie." (Pushes Jamie away, takes deep breath, pulls someone else into view.) "Now, to tell you what happened with Spirit as it reached what we thought was the top of a ridge of the Columbia Hills is Navigation Engineer Roger Walston...."

So darn dark, even after playing with the brightness.

Pictures to the left and right are better at showing the depth.

If NASA followed through with their plans, Opportunity is sitting on top of Burns Cliff, perhaps like in this interpretation:

Default navcam panorama

Its not stereo, but I did mosaic the navcams from sol 115 (the sol on the edge). I *think* Opportunity is about 180 degrees around the crater from its starting position. Its interesting to note that the 'wide' layer visible from the other side doesn't seem to extend around to the side Opportunity first approached. I could be wrong on that.

The brightness is adjusted heavily, from the originally very dark images.

I think you're right. Currently it's supposed to be at pan position 2, which is the pink spot at about 4 o'clock in this image:

I think Opportunity passed Burns Cliff several sols ago.

I'll agree. I was wrong about Burns Cliff. The orientation of the dunes in the satellite photo matches what it is seeing now from pan position 2.

What a view! It makes me feel dizzy.

The May 21 flight director's report confirms this, noting also that Opportunity is within a meter of the edge, and that the images show erosion of the cliff edge into the crater.

I love this picture -
http://qt.exploratorium.edu/mars/opp...9P2299L2M1.JPG

- for the little rover tracks visible at top centre. Small rover, big crater.

Ehy! It looks like this picture covers the whole path driven by Opportunity since it's arrival! I think I can see Eagle crater, far, far away...

Interesting how the optics of that first photo Opportunity took when it first arrived at Endurance made it look like a nice little scoot down the bank. Sure doesn't look like that from this latest shot.

I'm assuming that's Fram in the middle distance with the tracks next to it. If Eagle is visible, it's off to the left - see map.
